I booked some flights on 14 December, but couldn't remember when so looke don the website at the APD page, entered the details and it told me I had to pay £120...

I gave them a call and the girl confirmed that my booking was made on the 14 December, but I would have to pay the extra.

Clearly virgin should have their system validate via the booking reference so you cannot double pay the APD, and need to train their staff better![V]

I would call back and double check what the agent has told you.

The website clearly states that all bookings made on or after the 13th of December will have the extra tax included in the price paid so you shouldn't have to pay...:D

The APD calculation page is very dodgy, I paid my APD yesterday but even now when I enter my booking reference it says i still have the £80 to pay. They need to get it sorted and link the payments to the booking references as all I have to prove I have paid is the receipt, i'm sure many people could easily forget this additional piece of paper when travelling.

And can I use Amex to pay this disgusting rip-off? Somehow, I doubt it...

A piece in today's Sunday Times quotes that Virgin are still deciding what to do about the additional tax.

I'm hoping that they'll continue to be indicisive until after our trip to Miami next week:D

This just goes to prove why you shouldn't always believe what you read in the papers. Virgin have already made their decision and you have to pay! Richard told us about it in the main APD thread and this page on the VS website gives you all the details and info on how to pay!

Some airlines are dealing with this situation all to their own. From what I remember reading in the papers the other week...

* VS are doing what has already been mentioned by Neil
* easyJet have emailed all customers who have booked flights for February 07 onwards to pay the extra charge (we got sent an email about this a month or so back so I can second this)
*Jet2 have emailed all customers to warn them that the money owed for the new tax will be charged to their credit card/debited to their debit card automatically
* BA are absorbing this charge (for now)

I stand to be corrected!
