London Hotels - any suggestions

T'other half & I will be visting the capital in April for a show and are looking for a nice hotel for the Weekend. Its going to be a bit of a romantic one so somewhere nice, classy, modern (money not really a prob, although nothing silly!) and preferably in or around the Aldwych area( so we are nr the theatre!).

I have been looking at either One Aldwych or the Swissotel The Howard, has anybody stayed at either of these? or anybody else got any personal favs?

Any help/suggestions much appreicated.

When I last needed an hotel in London I used Priceline and got a 4* hotel in the area I wanted for £32 a night (that was 2 years ago) Use http://www.biddingfortravel.com for the list of hotels in the area you want and hints of how to bid

Thanks Dave, I looked at the Park Plaza Riverbank but couldn't make my mind up about it, have read some excellent and some not so excellent reviews, are the rooms spacious? I hate paying for a nice hotel and then getting a tiny room. Just looking I can book and executive riverview room for £150 inc breakfast, which is very good imo.

HL - I have looked at the bidding type sites but am always put off by not knowing what I will end up with, some of the 4* hotels I have looked at look terribly dated and old fashioned. Which hotel did you end up in?

I ended up in the Tower Thistle which is exactly what I wanted as I was visiting friends who live directly across the river from there. I was able to see them leaving their apartment and stroll along the embarkment and leave my room at exactly the right time to meet them at the end of Tower Bridge

Truly nice in the Aldwych area is One Aldwych

Right in the middle of where you want to be, consistently rated very highly, the Axis Restaurant is excellent, they mix a mean martini, and the rooms are modern and stylich! And the pool is delish!

I stayed at the Swissotel/Howard last year and it was perfect. Excellent location, very comfortable and well-equipped room (ask for one facing the Thames) and directly opposite the entrance to the Tube.

I've now stayed with two Marriott properties in London as well: County Hall and Grosvenor Square. At County Hall one's quite close to all the South Bank action, on top of it, in fact. A walk across the bridge and you are square on a Tube stop. Grosvenor's a bit stuffy but an excellent Mayfair location near the dreadful American Embassy, some interesting restaurants and a convenient Tube stop. Likes the Swissotel the Marriott has very comfortable rooms, especially the beds.

Slinky & Chuck, as you have both stayed at one of my main hotel choices can you let me know what the room sizes are like, I cannot stand small rooms and if you have any other tips that would be great too.

Despite some poor reviews on TripAdvisor I was pleasantly suprised and enjoyed my stay at The Trafalgar. Its a Hilton property and as long as you go for one of the bigger rooms, or get an upgrade with Hhonors they're great - and not at all chintzy.
Wether its special enough for a romantic get away I'm not sure, following on from whatovers have said I've good things about One Aldwych.

The other two I want to try are the Soho and Covent Garden Hotels.

I'd agree with Wolves about the Soho Hotel - very chic and a wonderful bar again. Also very good for celeb spotting.

As for One Aldwych - I would stay in a De Luxe room, at around 370 sq ft that seems adequate for me, and size as we know is important!
