Well, both hard drives backed up to external HD, time to go for it.
I might be away for a while as I change OS from Windows XP SP2 to Windows Vista Home Premium.[:0]

Wish me luck.....[:o)][:o)]

UPDATE:

Well, I am still on Windows XP as though when using the Vista compatability tool it said no major problems and I could install, when it came to it I got the following:-

"You must make the following changes before installing Windows
Close Windows installation and contact the device manufacturer for updated driver software for these devices:
SCSI and RAID controllers: VAX347S SCSI Controller
The compatibility report will be saved to the current Windows desktop. "

turns out it don't like Alcohol 120%'s driver and when you remove Alcohol, it does not remove the Plug and play and divice drivers so I havce spent a happy hour removing all traces (I hope!) of this driver.

Now to try again....

Just a quick qestion for Richard about upgrading.

Do you recommend upgrading from within XP or doing a brand new full HDD re-build ie starting with a formatted HDD?

I know when I installed the beta versions of Vista (as a new HDD build) Vista would never see my Promise IDE Raid device (ie the device my SATA hard drives sit on) onboard my Asus P4PE motherboard so I always needed a floppy disk with XP drivers on to be able to start the Vista install.

No BSOD either..right Richard [:w]

Just a little note, just got back from Circuit city, amazingly all their display models are now running one form of Vista or another, talking to the techs they said it was a very easy upgrade, so [y] to MS for making life easy for once.

Just suggesting a simpler solution. Windows vs Mac is an easy thing to talk about whereas the Airbus vs Boeing thing is a different story.

Need more than luck with Vista. A witch-doctor would be more useful.

Repeat after me: I want an Operating System that doesn't have crashing BUILT IN to its design. I choose MacOS.

I can't move to Vista at home ... I doubt my slow Athlon XP processor would cope with it. It has a hard enough time with iTunes at the moment. :o(

James - I'd do a clean install. You don't need to format the disk first. If the RAID drivers for your RAID adapator are not in the box, then yes you will have to present them on floppy/CD/USB or other removable media at the poitn where you choose where you want to install to.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard,
Just rang MS tech services, as we are now up to 5 hours and no sign that the repair wizard is working.

I have to ring up again in an hour as their computer cannot issue any tool references at the moment, can I ring back in an hour? :D[}:)]

Current situation:-
Question: What to Microsoft and Asda have in common??

Answer: Roll backs.

Have had to revert back to XP SP2, as one of the "problems" is that Nero 7 (even though Nero say its Vista compatable) was stopping the installation.
I will try again.
It might be also that my BIOS needs updating, but no update available on the HP web site. EMail to HP coming up.

We will see what tomorrows game brings. Not happy that |I have had to uninstall Nero 7 though...
