Also 3G coverage in the UK is still pretty patchy, well it is where I live. It's going to need something fast to be able to download tracks from iTunes.

Hmmm... I'm underwhelmed.

My Sony phone has 2MP camera, email, internet, radio, MP3 player, long battery-life... I don't see what else the iPhone offers?!

Presumably it's a 'style' thing for people who like Apple products in general? I'm not flaming, I just "don't get it"...

Well, no HSDPA = no iPhone for me. A fundamental mess up IMHO - you can't even realistically download your fave tracks from iTunes. What a strange marketing mix up.

I can't say I've really noticed any difference in battery usage between using my MDA Vario II in the UK and USA or Canada, Although I should add I don't use push email so it's only connected on demand. But I use it _loads_ as an HSDPA modem.

I guess I've been lucky, but within the areas of the UK I go to (London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds) I have not encountered any problem than I had with 2.5G. Admittedly these visits are usually in Metro areas.

My big concern is roaming 3G... at £7.50/Mb I can easily rack up £50+ per minute!!! Take care not to download those big email attachments...

Cheers, Howard

Superb gadget - fantastic presentation - I want one, but not at 8GB HD. It really needs to be 20GB+ and I hope Apple do that by the time of release. Given the size of storage disks now I'm surprised it wasn't announced with much greater storage capacity.

As for the others - well yes 3G is important in the UK, on cameras well I tend to use something called 'a camera' to take pictures (convergence doesn't work for me across the board), browsing and mapping is great and really useful, scheduling and diarizing are really only a benefit if Apple will talk to Microsoft ...

Loads of potential extensions I'm sure, e.g. how long before someone adds TomTom-like tools ...

Finally - it's not like Apple to announce something with such a long lead time to availability. Wonder why that is - often new products are available in store within days?

Looks like Carphone Warehouse are already taking pre-orders (er, "pre-interest"!)

I believe the long lead time announcement is to do with FCC filings on communication equipment. Schematics and details would then be available publicly before any actual product was announced. I think all the major phone manufacturers debut a phone a long time in advance before availability for this reason.

Personally, I think the 8GB is fine, but with the way that flash storage is going, I won't be surprised to see it with a 16GB+ drive before early 2008.

Thanks,

David.

I do not see any need for it. Its yet again hysteria based upon a brand name, rather like BMW.
I already have a phone which does all the Apple phone can do, admittidly not up to 8GB, but thats only 4 Mini SD cards anyway.

I am thinking of a Samsung Blackjack for my next phone, but it's 6 months away so who knows, I just cannot get past theApple price tag or I would be taking a look at it.

Alan,

Hate to disagree with you, but, well, I have to disagree with you.

The point about the iPhone has very little to do with the "me too" list of features like Bluetooth, Push Email, Cameraphones, etc, and everything to do with Apple.

What Apple bring's to this party is an integrated hardware and software experience that means everybody else's product looks clunky. Sure my Sony P990i has internet, WiFi, Push Email, two cameras, and pretty much everything iPhone promises on the checklist, but sadly the fact is that Sony nerfed their user interface and I use 10% of the phone's features as a result. Every other phone out there has a poor interface compared with iPhone.

The iPhone will sell because Apple are famous for making products that are a delight to use (and also come wrapped up in some of the best industrial design on the planet). Apple's entry into the market will divide it into "iPhones" and "Wannabes", and if the iPod market has taught as anything (and to a certain extent, the Sony Walkman 25 years before it), people will want the original and not the clone.

The existing players in the market have split up into various groups; those saying they will have a response to iPhone, and those saying their handsets offer similar functionality to the iPhone already. Those in the latter camp either have their head in the sand, or just can't admit they don't have a product ready to compete.

Me, well, I'm stuck with the P990 for 16 months (thanks very much Orange [:(]), so I'm not going to be an early adopter; but I do recognise the impact that iPhone will have. Hey, look at the impact it's already having, and it won't even be in consumers hands until June in the US.

Pete, surely this will only apply to Mac users?I have Windows mobile 5 and can interface with my computer very well using calendar, contacts, WM10, Word and excel, what on earth is an apple going to give me extra?
I have WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, plus quad band phone useage. Why do I need a mac interface?

So it can crash on you !

Seriously though, the phone looks like the best I have seen so far interface wise...it's just that price that is off putting.

I don't think it's a Mac-specific thing at all, it's things like the multi-touch screen and software optimised for an individual mobile device (rather than a skrunken operating system that has to remain, by its nature, generic enough to run on any mobile PC). MP3 players were not new when Apple introduced the iPod. What was new was the simplicity of the click wheel combined with the interface you used to get at your music. I recommend you watch the MacWorld keynote where Steve Jobs demonstrates it. I'm not suggesting you buy one, but I am suggesting it will change the mobile phone market.

Ah well, I hate the click wheel, prefer WMP 11 to the ipod and I do have both. The problem always for Apple is it only makes for itself and by nature the majority will go for Windows based as that's their safety zone

I disagree. Microsoft aren't the majority player in the mobile phone market (and they've been in it a while), so there's no 'natural' reason for purchasers to gravitate toward Windows Mobile. But that said, I don't think Apple will be the majority player either.

Jason Snell has written a rather interesting editorial on the whole reaction of the market to iPhone, which I recommend you take a look at. The jist of his article is summarised in his last paragraph;

"IÕm not saying AppleÕs going to win this war Ñ not at all. Like I said, IÕm not an apologist or acolyte or worshipper. What I am saying is, the iPhone is a sign that AppleÕs entering this market with the full force of its strength and skill at making electronic devices. And as a phone company, you ignore and dismiss them at your peril."

I agree with that. Apple don't even think there's going to be close to market leader. Jobs is targeting for 1% market share of the mobile phone market in 2008, with one anaylist predicting a market share of 7% by 2016. The point is that they have the marketing savvy to convince people that their current handset isn't as good as an iPhone. And good or bad, that will be disruptive to the mobile phone market.

Apple have to look at sourcing their archtecture to other people if they do want to make a splash in the segument away from the "look I have the latest toy" gang and make it compatable with IBM/PC computers.
How they will (not) sell to the PAYG market will be fun, but not at the prices Apple will charge I would imagine. Look out for the rash of iPhone stolen in street stories
#162035 by Pete

Alan, you may have missed a memo, but Apple have been compatible with Windows for many years. You can even run Windows natively on Macs now, and there are more Windows iPod users than Mac ones. I'm really not sure what you mean by "sourcing their arch(i)tecture to other people". That doesn't make sense. Do you mean make Mac OS X Open Source? (Why on earth would they want to do that?)

Apple's business strategy for the PAYG market bears no relation to whether the iPhone will have a disruptive impact on the overall market, and commenting that there will be rash of stolen iPhones contradicts your opinion that you "do not see any need for it"

Just an FYI...On our trip last week we ran into an exec from Cingular..after a few drinks she agreed to get me one of these things, but told me to wait till after Christmas as they (she didn't say if it was cingular or Apple) were having issues with the phones and she expects there to be various problems and updates for the first couple of months after the release.
