London By Night

A totally random post I know but I just felt like sharing this with you all!

Having flown back from EDI this evening on BMI, we were met with what must have been the clearest night over London I can remember. We were stacked for ten minutes over NW London with views stretching right over the city.

Wembley must have been testing their floodlights as it was lit up like a Xmas tree and looked great. The "dark side" eye was bathed in red (part of red nose fame academy I guess).

Once we left the stack, a quick trip over north London before following the Thames into LHR. London from the air always impresses me, but on such a clear night it was breath taking! Well worth getting stuck on a later flight.

It got me thinking - are there any other airports which provide such great views on the way in / out?

Nice post! OK, my favourites are:

LHR from the west with views over Windsor Castle and Eton (we flew over shortly after the fire and got a very clear view)

LHR from the east where you get the Thames Barrier, the Tower, Tower Bridge, my friend's apartment, the Gherkin, Westminster and a lot more besides

EWR when you come in past Manhattan

SFO over the Golden Gate Bridge

HKG - enough said!

SYD with full views of the Bridge and the Opera House

CNS and the views of the Great Barrier Reef

DXB flying out over the Palm

DUB when you fly in from the east over Dublin Bay and can see right down into the heart of the city

MCO when you take off over Cape Canaveral and the captain points it out to you

MAN/LPL when you can see the Fylde Coast (where I was born and lived for several years)

DCA where you fly in over the Potomac river. In the K seat you get the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery; in the A seat you get the full monty of the White House, the Washington Monument, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and every other memorial you can think of!

SEA when you see Mount Ranier in all its glory.

Taking off and going west to the USA over the west coast of Ireland to be able to see my home place.

Coming in over a cloud-free south coast of Ireland from the USA to be able to see the town I live and other landmarks.

Any way into ORK either over the city or over the sea because I know I'm nearly home!! [y]

IS there anywhere that Honeylamb hasn't been too? I want to be your bag [:p]

Flying into Chicago on an internal flight last year, approaching over the lake with a clear, cold front leaving the sky blue and the water frozen. Not a pretty city, but a stunning view.

And as HL said, flying into Newark down past Manhattan - on my first and only UCS experience 10 or so years back..

Flying over LAS enroute to LAX is pretty cool. Nothing but barren desert, then you fly over this glowing mass of coloured Neon! You can clearly make out the green of the MGM Grand and the Luxor beam.

I have to say that SYD is a great view with the harbour! LHR, with great views over the city and Thames, and SFO seeing the Golden Gate bridge. Last but not least PER!!! My home town, knowing that I am home once again, and the beautiful city with the Swan River. [y]

Not a pretty city ... wow you've just insulted 4 million people and me [:p]. I think Chicago is fantastic, especially from the air.

I think HKG/SYD or GIG are some of the best.

...flying into GIB was the first time I panicked in a plane - the lack of tarmac until the very last second had me reaching to check that the life vest was where it was meant to be!

Maybe it's becuase I work away for long periods, and LHR represents "Home", but I have always thought that arriving there across the city on a clear day or night was simply the best view in the world.

HKG comes a close second though, particularly with a routing over the Harbour.
PEK may be third with stunning views of the mountains to the north and the Great Wall.

Sorry. A misguided comment on my part as the only bit I've ever visited is the airport! Here's hoping I win the competition on the VS website and can have my opinions gently corrected by the locals.
