I just booked some flights with UA, and then phoned up to have some upgrade awards applied to them.
The agent reconfirmed the upgrades with an email, and in the email, it mentions this:
"Please print a copy of
your itinerary confirmation and
place it inside your checked
baggage for identification
purposes while you are traveling."
What a great piece of advice. If the label comes off your checked bag, it becomes very easy to work out who the bag belongs to from the printed itinerary - they can link it back to your PNR, print another bag tag, and get it back on it's way.
I'll bet that was suggested by an employee who has to try and sort out the missing bags!
