Great! Having being crippled by the person in front more times than I can remember (and for what significant benefit to them?) I have been wishing that more airlines would remove this from their Y product for 20 years or more.[y]

Good for Ryan air. If they can make it work I am sure they will drive more demand on the routes they serve. I really cannot see this individually affecting the existing carriers. Now, if you said open-skies generally will adversely affect existing carriers, I would have to agree. But a LCC v VS - no comparison IMHO.

Referring to the situation with Neil's parents flying with Oasis, I for one would sometimes go for the lower fare if it meant I was getting more for my money, especially if it is my first time I've done business with them...and I think that is the general consensus among Joe Public nowadays.

The problem for VS is that people want more for their money or the cheapest possible fare and while it has indirectly led to the success of LCC's in the short-haul market, it has directly lead to the success of Maxjet, EOS and Silverjet, and of course others such as Oasis, Zoom etc.

If VS wants to compete with these carriers now and in the future post-Open Skies then they need to go back to their roots in 1984...do what made them a success back then and apply it to today!

Although the bean counters will probably say "No!" [:(!]

Just my thoughts!

Agreed- although cant see the VS been counters being too happy at being proactive in Y as they were back in the day. For a carrier that gave us PTVS in Y its shocking that they still dont have AVOD across the fleet.....gone are the days of VS at the forefront in Y I think.

In my opinion, VS started out as a sort of a quasi-LCC carrier, then evolved into the cheeky competitor to BA and then changed into what I now regard as almost a legacy carrier, albeit still with a hint of the element of fun the airline began with.
VS priorities are now more similar to those of BA, LH, AF etc than cutting edge products eg. Eos etc.

Yeah but VS from the start offered service rarely found on other airlines for a good price, which isn't exactly the same motive of LCCs. They were basically like faux LCCs in my opinion.

Yeh they did- the birth of VS was out of Highland Express which lasted only 6 or so months flying routes from PIK routing on to LGW/BHX.

I havent looked at the history part of the VS website in years but they did use to have a bit on their that said they started out to offer low fares across the atlantic much like Laker had tried previously.
