My partner uses his Black Amex a lot and pays it off every month. This past few months the statements only seem to appear to be arriving on our doorstep every OTHER month. The last one included interst as it was paid 1 day later than usual. This month nothing has arrived so he's paid via the website to stay within the interest free period, but right at the end the site crashed so have to wait till tommorow to see if its got through.

Are they playing silly buggers to add interest when they can?

I have had a couple of bad experience with them recently. Firstly they added £22 interest on my statement even though I have never paid late and always pay my balance in full, when I spoke to them they didn't know what had happened and just said it was obviously an error [V] they ended up agreeing to issue me a credit.

I also had a similar problem with the online payment system, made a payment, got a reference number to say it had gone through but when I was speaking to them about my interest charge I mentioned that my payment wasn't showing and it hadn't infact it hadn't gone through so I luckily managed to pay over the phoen before my due date and not occur any interest, but if I hadn't then no doubt I would have been at fault and charged[V]

He has telephoned them today, after a full ten minutes pressing options on the phone he got to a real person. No the transaction had not gone through, they accepted payment over the phone and had no answer as to why the paper statements were so eratic. Luckily the balance was not due to be paid till 26th, if it had been left there would have been interest.

I didnt realise you could pay over the phone?

Last month i phoned them to ask if they could take payments over the phone and they said "no" and best to do it online?

I always pay over the net. I check my card balances on a semi-regular basis (useful to check for when items are credited, if there are any strange transactions, etc) and when the bill is due, i make the payment online and the payment is processed the next day (if made before 5pm). I find it a lot easier to pay them directly, as if something goes wrong or the payment goes missing, there isnt a third party to deal with.

Thanks,
Sarah

The CS agent I spoke to the second time was really nice and helpful and she said that its better to pay over the phone as they quite often get problems with net payments (although this was the first time I have had a problem in over 7 months). What annoys me more is how they are just randomly adding interest, its out of order and unacceptable imo.

Always, always check your statements from financial institutions. They are dealing with millions of transactions and statements and will not be checking the accuracy of same. This was brought home to me when back in my banking days when I was working with mortgage company and the statements to be produced for my clients had to be penny perfect. This caused them a problem, for the management stated they only did high level checks, relying on the system to be right ninety something percent of the time. For the remaining percentage their approach was "when someone complains we'll adjust the next payment accordingly".
