What should I wear?

I think there was a topic like this a long while ago but I could not find it...

I'm off to Tokyo in a couple of days and as the time gets nearer and the thought of 12 hours in economy is looming large I have an important decision to make - what do I wear?

Last year I went for jeans and t-shirt with an overshirt with pockets and a light jacket which I ended up stowing in hand luggage. Everything was fine except the jeans were giving me the irrits after several hours, and were frankly disgusting after 18+ hours of travel.

This year I am thinking of wearing my black tracksuit bottoms, a T shirt and a hooded sweatshirt which has handy pockets. The jacket can stay in the suitcase as it was surplus to requirements. My other half is horrified and thinks I've just turned the corner to old age as I am thinking of comfort first. I admit I am, as I am not a natural athlete and I would not normally wear sports clothes except to go to the gym. I think the outfit looks fine - but the other half will apparently be ashamed if I arrive at the hotel in the gear.

Opinons? When travelling in Y do you go for comfort/practicality or want to look good?

Why not put your tracksuit bottoms into your carry-on and change into them for the flight? That way your other half's sensibilities will not be offended when you are on public view in the airport and arriving at the hotel and you will be comfortable on the flight.

I think you'll need to go for a compromise - either take a change of clothing as HL said or go for something a bit more comfortable (for 12 hours) than jeans but perhaps not on the same your-wife-will-stay-twenty-paces-behind-you level as tracksuite bottoms.

Have you ever looked into Upper Class a couple of hours into the flight ... to see lots of oddly shaped people in the comfort of their ninja suits, which are essentially comfort suits for grown ups .

I say travel in anything that's comfortable, damn everyone else (three hours in they'll be wishing they were you anyway) and have a toast as I welcome you to what my no. 1 calls the age of beige - where comfort gains the upper hand over what people might think of you!
