Eurovision

Sorry to post my second post tonight but Ive stumbled on to The Eurovision song contest tonight, but Im finding it harder and harder to take the EVSC as a real talent contest when the GB contestants are awarded NIL points...We the British will never win until our continental cousins understand that countries like Iraq need the opportunity to decide their own future(With the Americans help).

Or..... you could just see the Eurovison for what it is, a complete waste of time with little or no talent on show.

Of course I'm not really qualified to comment as I haven't watched one since about 1975....But something tells me nothings changed

This is now just a sham. All the Baltic states voting for each other, back scratching of the highest order, but nothing new in that. Everyone in europe hates us, we are just looked upon as Americas poodle. Bloody Tony blair!! I think it is now time for us to say stick it, we don't want to play anymore, and take our ball back never to return. BTW, I thought our entry was pretty good in the sence that it was pure Eurovision.

Everybody in Europe has ALWAYS hated us!
They have never forgiven us for not succumbing to the Germans in 1940 like they did.
What you do see is the Future for the EEC in this, with Germany and France losing their power over it, to be controlled by the Eastern europe bloc.

The Eurovision is an affront to music and is a complete waste of my tax. But this is UK tv today, that horrible waste of airtime Big brother is coming back soon as well.

IIRC the original driver of the Contest back in the 60s was to promote / prove television broadcasts across Europe - Bring back Katy Boyle I say

Eurovision as was is long gone. Yes I get annoyed about how the Eatern European countries block vote, but have come to accept that this is the way it is going to be, like it or not, I am sure it will turn around again in a few year.

I still adore Eurovision in its modern format, I was just gutted Ukraine didn't win, oh well roll on Eurovison 2008 in Serbia, only 53 weeks to go:D

Every year we say never again but it's car crash TV and Terry Wogan makes it quite entertaining.

I agree that the Eastern bloc vote is unfortunate but then it has been going on for years in other areas - Greece / Cyprus, Scandanavia etc. The fact that we recieved our votes from Malta and Ireland says a lot and I do feel it was very ungracious of us to not reciprocate to the Irish - OK they looked like they'd all been on the Guiness and the singer sounded like nails on a blackboard but at least it was traditional.

It was suggested by Ken Bruce on radio 2 this morning that the way forward is an Eastern and Western contest - maybe that has mileage.

Please do not feel ungracious. The song and the singing was woeful. I thought that she sounded flat but I think nails on a blackboard is a better description. And as for the song itself - well it was written by a journalist - nuff said!

Isn't it this very point that makes the whole thing a complete waste of time?

I don't see the point; it's not really a competition and the acts seem pretty unentertaining in terms of quality[:?]

I used to think the technology behind linking all of Europe with one TV broadcast was amasing. But these days I just watch it for Terry Wogans commentary. Sadly I missed this year, but I did "Listen Again" to the Ken Bruce commentary on the Radio2 Website, but whilst in the same vain as TW he's not in the same league.

P.S. Also check out the Eurovision pages on Wikipedia - some great trivia there - most wins ~(Ireland), most hostings (UK) - we stepped in as backup on four ocassions. Every single year has it's own page with the votes awarded to each country by each country. Detail overload.

There's an episode of "Father Ted" - "Song For Europe" - where Ted and Dougal are chosen to represent their country specifically to ensure that they don't win and so relieve Ireland of the burden of hosting the contest...

That was made at a time when Ireland had won the contest (and hosted it) 4 times in 5 years so I can understand the sentiment.

Less understandable is why the UK decided to host it in 1963 when France declined due to expense. Although the UK had only come fourth in 1962, Monaco and Luxembourg (who came second and third) had also declined because of the expense. But then again there was a lot more money floating around in the early sixtees [:?]

Yeah, and the calibre of television programmes went down drastically at that time as the licence money went on hosting the competitions. The very small town of Millstreet got an extra-long railway platform as a result of the competition being shown in a show-jumping arena there and the only good thing to come out of Eurovision was Riverdance which started as the interval piece......

......except that it gave us the self-promoting Michael Flatley
