One way car hire

Anyone know of the best site, currently, for car hire in the US? I seem to remember a discussion here, a couple of months back (can't find it, naturally), but I don't think the thread included if you want to pick up in one place and drop off in another. From my research so far, a lot of sites don't seem to mention the facility quote for anything other than collecting and returning to the same place - anyone got some good info about which site(s) to use? My pick-up will be LAX and drop off will be McCarran airport....

Claire - I've used Hertz to do the same and they've very easy to deal with and the booking via their Web site is striaghtforward. There is of course a charge for drop off in a different place - and I think this varies by car but may also more because you're crossing two states and Hertz does tell you before a booking is confirmed! Hertz may not be the most inexpensive however.

Thanks Slinky. I do expect to pay a drop off charge, and it would obviously be preferable to find this out (and how much) before committing myself.

We did a one way from Cedar Point to Chicago, when booking the car they included the One-Way fee on the rental so we knew up front what it was - not too expensive.

I am using Avis for a number of rentals in Australia later this year. I believe the US site is the same but you can tick a box on the first screen to indicate the return will be to a different location and it then gives you a further screen to pick that location. You can try both ways to see what the differing costs will be.

Another thought - Hertz is very easy to book, and very easy to cancel. So maybe a thought is to book one and if you get a better deal simply cancel it ... there's no charge and no commitment if you choose the non-pre pay option.

I do a lot of my car hire (both European and USA) through a Manchester based company on their site at http://www.carhire3000.com. They have no credit card fees, no cancellation fees, no amendment fees and, last time I used them for a one-way drop off, (2005) no fee for that either. And they take AMEX!!!

Airline Network use Dollar and one way hires are catered for.
ISTBC, but I don't think there is a one way surcharge for hire in CA and drop off in NV.

Or try booking on the UK site of Dollar. For our hire, pick-up at LAX and drop off at SFO, they came out a couple of pounds cheaper than airline network.
Plus point of booking direct with Dollar is that we can cancel, with no penalty.

Same for me, I don't remember paying a one-way fee with AVIS for NV to CA.

Watch out on the rates for mileage inclusion though, some won't charge a fee but do charge per mile instead.

I always use Avis for all my car hire in the US, always find the rates reasonable and the vehicles are generally nearly new and in good condition. They will do one ways. If you have the time, register for the Avis Prefered service, you literally turn up and drive off, no form filling etc. You get points too !!!

Have used Airline Network for the past - oh, several years really. But I remember a thread here a few months back which suggested they weren't always the best deal anymore and I know things do change so thought I'd ask you guys and do some research too.

Good point re the preferred service - anything that will shorten the queues at these places!
