Thought this article on saving money on Rail fares by working the system from theBBC Website might be of use and / or interest to some here.

I've done this in the past Paul and the ticket clerk was very unhappy to sell me two separate fares rather than one single ticket to a destination (Bridgend-Reading incidentally).I'd previously looked at "thetrainline" website and worked out that two tickets were much cheaper than one.
I did make a bit of a fuss and asked to see written documentation stating that I was unable to purchase two separate journeys to arrive at a destination (which he was unable to produce). He did eventually back down but said I'd have to alight at Bristol Parkway (where the second ticket was valid from) which of course I duly did (not).Interesting to see the BBC state that this doesn't need to be done. I saved myself a load of money.

with any luck if we all started doing it and creating a load of extra work for the ticket office, they would simplify all the fares again.
Sadly I think they'd probably change change the rules to say we can't buy tickets for seperate journeys.

That said, booking online and collecting from the machines at the station is the best we of getting a good price these days.
