Laptop Suggestions?

OK, my laptop has died! Its been a while since I had to go and buy one so does anyone have any good ideas?

I am looking for one less than £750, ideally it should have at least a 15" screen capable of resolutions of 1280 x 1024 minimum.

I don't play games on it, but as my old laptop had Vista on it I would like the new one to have vista and be able to make use of the Aero interface (which my last laptop couldn't)

I have recently bought 2 x 1gb PCR2700(I think that is the type) SODIMMS so anything I can re-use these in is an advantage.

Needs to be lightweight (less than 3kgs) and needs to be a workhorse as I use it for over 12 hours most days! :(

ps, I have seen a decent laptop that has a AMD Turion 64 processor in it, Are there any issues with these in terms of software compatibility?

Being a little more positive - look at Toshiba - they've been having an offer where if it goes wrong they'll fix it AND give you your money back...

Sorry, just that I'm in a similar postion (although to be fair I've never owned a laptop/notebook). Was looking for a lightweight notebook with integrated mobile broadband (similar to the Dell XPS M1330?) to take to Oz. Being away for a month and out of touch makes me edgy.

I have a couple of HP laptops at the moment and they are great. Not sure what the current lineup is like but worth having a look.

Also owned an Acer until recently and it was pretty good as well, not quite as well built as HP but decent prices.

Misco often have some very good deals on laptops so worth a look

Just got a Phillips Freevents X59 - I got it from PCWorld (yeah, I know, I was shocked too!) and it was £549... 12.1" screen 1.85kg, 802.11a wireless broadband, 4 in 1 media card, intel core 2 duo, windows vista, express card 34/54 (whatever that is). The bollocks...

I have been looking at an HP with the AMD chip. Looks reasonable.

Scrooge, you posted a link to a Gateway laptop. I thought they pulled out of the UK (In fact I KNOW they pulled out of the UK as they left me high and dry on some warranty!). So I guess Tesco must be importing them from somewhere. Spec did look OK though.

Having had gateways in the past I wouldn't rush back to them, especially with the historical warranty issues.

I also agree with the above posts about Sony. Never like Sony laptops.

The Philips does sound good but the screen is a little small. I will have a look see if they do a bigger screen. As I use this as my main PC and I am progressing in years now I have to think about my eye health!

Misco are in fact doing £100 cash back on a few HP Laptops which is very tempting......

Stay away from Toshiba - awful laptops in terms of performance and support.

HP machines are pretty good, so too are Dell's Latitude range. I've just got a new Lenovo X61 as I wanted a powerful yet, small laptop.

One answer and it has a bit of fruit on the front.

Once you have one Mac you will never go back even if you wnat .

Whilst a MacbookPro seems a bit pricey if you know anyone with an NUS Card they can get a huge discount on it for you.

If you hold on for a couple of weeks Apple are set to launch OS X Leopard (Vista was released to compete with Tiger) which will be able to, so I am informed, run two interfaces at once- so if you want to you could run Vista on your mac. Of course there will be many more features.

Do not buy Packard Bell - biggest load of rubbish and waste of time ever!

I once thought that Windows was the only system to have but I made the jump to Apple and bought a beautiful Macbook and have never looked back!

No problems with Dell for me - would definitely recommend them. However, if I was starting again I'd probably go for an Apple[:I]

as I own a toshiba,compaq & macbook the first one I pick up is the macbook every time. so that gets my vote although it has only a 13 inch screen it beats the windows p.c.s hands down

Just picked up a refurbed Macbook pro from Apple in the UK for £1100.

Cannot recomend them enough (This is my second. Sold the first on ebay as it didn't have 802.11n nor C2D)

well worth the money and the widescreen is fab for watching movies when united have cancelled your flight

hmm, no sure. I do own a Mac. VERY VERY Good for what I bought it for (Movies, Music and Photo's). Just something I don't think I can use daily.)

I have opted for an HP6715b with 15" WSXGA+ Screen (Higher resolution), 160gb HD, DVD Combo Drive and an AMD 64 bit chip (Don't have any 64 bit software!) Ordered from Misco at £678 including VAT and applicable for £100 cash-back with HP. Also got 5% through a quidco type arrangement. Vista business installed (Hmm.. could be interesting. Wonder how you activate that!)

And I thought I would go for Ricky Martin on the latpop side :D

I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 almost a year ago and use it for a few hours every day. I started of with XP Pro moved to Vista Business and am now running Vista Ultimate - no major problems with any of these changes.

I did spec it up (which is one of the nice things with Dell) so it ended up about twice your budget but for that I got a Core 2 Duo T7200 2GHZ processor plus 2GB ram and the top end 15.4 inch screen, wireless with built in Blue Tooth, 120GB SATA and DVD R/RW drive and it included a full copy of MS Office.

Weight is in line with your requirement, I went for the nine cell battery so get about four hours fairly intensive use from one charge.

If I were buying today I would probably go for a Mac Book Pro but can't fault the Dell.

I recommend Samsung - I have a q35 (now superceeded by the q45). It's light (1.7kg), has a good screen (12.1" wide) and I've had upto 5 1/2 hours out of the battery....
