""Over sale upgrades"?"

Saw this term mentioned in another thread and wondered what it meant.....

Am flying LHR-JNB in late October but for the outbound leg unaccompanied by my usual Virgin travel companion who is a J29. On previous occasion ( and for this occasion ) in this situation I've been happy to go to the ticket desk and pay for the upgrade, so interested to know what an "over sale upgrade" is, just so I'm prepared on the day to ask the right people in the right way.

All airlines routinely oversell aircraft in all classes. If economy is oversold but there are spaces in PE then they will move certain pax up to the next class. The same applies to PE - UC.

I think Declan was referring to the practice of overselling seats on the plane - all airlines oversell classes of tickets to compensate for no-shows/cancellations. So, if Econ is oversold and all folks turn up, then there'll probably be some upgrades to PE and so on up the chain. Personally, I'd rather book the higher class in the first place or pay for an upgrade in miles/cash.

When I fly with my friend who works for Virgin ( on a Mates ticket ), we get upgraded to UC if there is capacity.

As I understand it, he's a J29 which is some kind of high level upgrade authority ( may mean more )
