I've never had my hand baggage weighed, but seen others have theirs done. Seems to depend on who checks you in and how heavy the bag looks. How much over are you likely to be?

In general, I think that the main problem is not always the amount it weighs and what VS thinks, but whether those nice people at BAA think that the bag is too big! Weighing bags by VS seems to not only depend on who checks you in, but what class you are travelling (ie less likely if travelling UC!).

Simple, if you have a large book or something similar, take it out during check in just in case. When you get to security they're more bothered about whether you two bags or one, and don't have scales in any case.
