The present Mrs Treelo has informed me that I will enjoy the trip she is planning to Southern California, Nevada and Utah. It was meant to be Northern California but she who must be obeyed had decided to exercise her prerogative and make a volte face.

So, enough of the background. I have been thrown the crumb of being allowed to - and I don't for a moment believe my suggestion will be unilaterally adopted - choose a hotel in San Diego for our first stop after a drive from LA.

Any suggestions?

The present Mrs Treelo is missing out on wonderful scenery along the northern Californian coast and the redwoods - not to mention the Napa Valley and other wine regions

Hyatt was good - Manchester Towers or something similar if IIRC.

It depends what you're after in my opinion; the Hyatt is downtown (although on the waterfront) but Mission Bay would be better if you're after sea and sand.

It is the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and it is [y][y][y]

My choice when ever I am in San Diego.

There is also a very nice restaurant maybe a 5 min walk away called the fish market...again [y][y][y]

I would follow VS045's suggestion... I haven't stayed there, but have stayed at the Marriott next door. After staying at the Marriott and looking around the Hyatt, we would have prefered the Hyatt - less familes and a nice "quiet" pool (the Marriott pool was MOBBED with leaping, screaming kids... not our type of thing [:#] ). The Hyatt is right on seaport village and close to the historic Gas Lamp Quarter - good location. Hyatt website - http://manchestergrand.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/

If you wanted something more "seasidey" then the Del Coronado is worht a look, but it's location is a bit "out on a limb". So, because of location, I would go for the Hyatt.

We stayed at Loews Coronado bay resort. A bit out of the way but very nice and quiet.

Sorry honey lamb, especially after your message about the Benbow [:I] But you know what its like, there are 2 sexes on this earth, those who give the orders and men [B)]

Seriously though, we have been to the Napa region, guided by a cousin who lives near SFO only 4 years ago, but have not driven south for over 10 years. Plus we have never been to San Diego and I think a glowing report from a friend who travelled there earlier this year was the deciding factor. I have no doubt we'll get back north in a couple of years time :)

It has to be Hotel Del Coronado - my fav in that part of the world (as seen in the film Some Like it Hot)- if not then the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hyatt in Gas Lamp (?) area is cool - esp the cocktail bar at the top during sunset !!

If you choose not to stay there, still worth a visit to the Del Coronado to look around: lots of history, a big stretch of beach and one of those "cold stone" ice cream parlour (which is hard to beat...) :D

We visited the Del Coronado whilst doing a cycling tour of Coronado Island on a cruise that stopped at San Diego. A guided bicycle tour was a nice way to see Coronado Island.

The City Trolley Tour was also great - a good way to get a feel for the city, to learn about it's history and you could "hop on and hop off" whenever you liked.

The Del is a little ways away from everything, the Manchester is right at the bottom of the Gas Lamp area.

There are a few good hotels in that general area, but they can be $$$$

check biddingfortravel they have the latest price updates on priceline, bid right and you will get the hotel you want and save $$$ as well.

I would offer you my ideas on some choice hotels in San Diego but what you really need is a poor but credible suggestion to ensure that you are overruled. The last thing you want is to be held responsible for the inevitable shortcomings of any hotel that YOU selected. I don't want the responsiblity either, but there are some suitably mediocre hotels on Hotel Circle South. Check Google maps.
