Afternoon

Off to SFO next week. I currently have a Blackberry Pearl but would like to get one of the Curves (quite happy with an 8300, or perhaps 8310).

Does anyone know anywhere in San Francisco I could get an unlocked/simfree handset only?

Many thanks

Sorry cannot advise on a retailer, other than I always found it difficult to find anything that was n't tied to a 2 year plan in CA.

Thats why I went for the iPhone.

When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, I was chatting to a phone salesman in Best Buy. He told me that the phone part of Best Buy was in the process of being sold off to the UK company - Carphone Warehouse.

He didn't say what the timescale was, but he did say that one of the big things they planned was to sell unlocked phones - he told me that this is almost unheard of in the US. I cannot vouch for what he told me, but Best Buy may be worth trying.

I could not agree anymore Nick BUT things are looking up. I got a DingleBerry 8830 'World Edition' from Verizon Wireless. Verizon using CDMA but the 8830 has GSM too. I called the DingleBerry support folks and asked for the unlock code and they called back in about an hour with the code. I did not even have to come up with an excuse. Just asked...Too simple.

I would thing unlocking will become more of the norm in the US. Verizon (be it CDMA) will start relaxing unlocking rules. Link: Verizon Announces Plans to Unlock Network

Not sure about any reliable retailer. You can get some good stuffs from Ebay. You can go for locked mobiles which wold be still low in cost than unlocked ones. You can get them unlocked using unlock code. you can get the unlock code from at affordable cost.

Folks, if anyone is looking at this thread for information about buying a BB in the USA, I just want to point out that the information in the thread is nearly five years old and so will be out of date. If you want to find out information if might be better to start a new post about it. In fact to avoid confusion I'm going to lock this one
