It seems since the beginning of the year a trend of doom and gloom has been appearing on these boards. VS are clearly a tiny bit in the brown stuff, with the IBFT's being axed and constant rumours of mergers, FSM role going and even the beloved (by some VF's) bar being scrapped. THis coupled with some ten airlines going bust has not made for a happy time on the 'other airlines' part of the forums.

Well do not fear Emirates is about to save the day and show the rest of the world how to run an airline!

Emirates yesterday announced a US$1.37billion profit, this is a 62% increase on last year!!! This is pretty impressive given all the excuses that are being banded around the aviation sector at the moment.

As a thank you all staff have received a bonus equivalent to 14 weeks pay.

My very reliable source also informs me that EK routes ex UK are doing very well in particular the daily NCL-DXB route and the airline is sniffing around at opening another direct DXB at least another UK airport.

With the 380's arriving later in the year and being put into use on two routes that will directly compete with VS (and another route that indirectly competes with VS), times could well be about to get alot harder for VS.

Carrier is planning to have some 450 aircraft by 2019 and is also looking into the possibility of starting an LCC in the Middle East which I guess would be similar to VX rather than FR.

My friend works for emirates, and the crew are paid really well, as well as having their accommodation and their bills paid for. However, they work very hard, with very short layovers. They can do a 16 hour flight to houston, then only have one night and fly back again!
With Emirates you have to remember that they have huge amounts of money to pour into the company due to all the rick sheiks, so they can afford to have lots of new planes and a fantastic product.
That said, their first class cabin is very rarely busy, and they have the same IFE and seating problems, just like we have at Virgin. They probably also get good rates on fuel. They are expanding like mad, and when you land at DXB, you cant help but be impressed by the rows and rows of Emirates A/C.
Wouldn't mind 14 weeks pay as a bonus, that is a big sum of money!!

Fuel is costing them $35 a barrel or so if I remember correctly from the press release, a major advantage.

Not really. I didn't fly EK over the past year, so they are due a correction over this weekend, once they figure out they'll need to perform a global re-stock of Dom. [:p]

I'm confident you will find this is not the case, EK is run like any other company & must show it's investors a return. Like any other airline it's fleet is a mixture of owned & leased aircraft.
This is from the EK website & no mention is made of paying just US$35 a barrel http://www.emirates.com/uk/english/abou ... OFITS.aspx & there is no way that EK are paying this now.
