Just perused the forum and noticed a previous post regarding SFO hotel recommendations in 2007.

I want to go late 2009 early 2010 and wondered if peoples opinions had changed or if any new hotels had appeared.

Perhaps I should wait until after 'Bay to breakers' but your help as always would be appreciated.

Depends on where you want to stay and how much you want to pay. One thing though, avoid the so-called 'boutique' hotel. One step down from a Blackpool B&B...

That would help.

Want 4 or 5 star, not too worried about the cost.

Centrally located or located adjacent to public transport.

Thanks

For that, you are looking around Market St/Union Square. Masses to choose from although usually quite pricey. I stayed in the Westin 50 Market St and it was ok, for a city centre hotel room I barely used except to sleep in.

Have a look at the V-Flyer reviews section for some hints. [:)]

I've stayed in the Hyatt Union Square a few times for work. Locations great, rooms exactly as you would expect, the plus was the amazing concierge who could get you into any restaurant you wanted with next to no notice.

We stayed at the Intercontinental on Howard Street, which opened in Feb '08. It was well located and very nice too, think I put a review in the reviews bit and also some good photos etc on trip advisor.

The W San Francisco is a very nice hotel. That's where I usually stay when I'm there.

Personally, I LOVE the W. I know many others don't, but to me - it's the best hotel there... [:I]

We stayed in the Downtown Marriott last July and thought it was pretty good. The location was just down the street from Union Square and everything was pretty much within walking distance.

They also have a cocktail lounge on the top floor (37th I think) which has some pretty fantastic views of the city and the bay area.

The main reason for booking this hotel though was the indoor pool, there's nothing like a nice swim after a hard day's walking around a city.

Yup - the Marriott's bar ('The View') on the top is stunning...

BUT the better views are from either the Mark Hopkins or the Hilton's 'CityScape' on O'Farrell....

The Mark (Mark Hopkins) is still probably our favourite although there is now a new Intercontinental, the San Francisco Intercontinental which we have not tried. The MO is also worth consideration.

At The Mark and for a few dollars a night you can join the Club Intercontinental which gives you access to an open bar with a good range of wines, spirits and soft drinks and a decent range of complimentary food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Make sure you ask for a high floor with Golden Gate and/or Bay views.

The 'Top of the Mark' has magnificent views and is well worth a visit if only for a drink or three.

Personally, I would recommend the Chancellor Hotel. OK, it's a 3* but it is great place, it's on Powell St (so Cable cars), overlooking Union Sq and a 5 min walk to the BART.

The only question is how important is air conditioning to you? As it doesn't have it (it's a pre-1906 earthquake building) but if you're going late 2009/early 2010, you shouldn't need it.

Hotel Vitale ... http://www.hotelvitale.com ... is my favourite. I'm not in the W camp (uggh and tiny rooms unless you pay mega bucks and the bar is full of prossies), the new Intercontinental is very shiny but the Vitale is cool, great views, fab service, lovely rooms (the panoramic suites are to die for) and is favoured by the r&f.
