Headed back out on the E subway and the airtrain to JFK. From hotel to Terminal 4 was about 50 minutes and only $7 - what a bargin!!
Check-in was empty and straight up to the Upper Class desk (as an Au holder). Managed to switch seats to the bulkhead row. Bags tagged as Upper and then off to the lounge with our entry pass. Settled in nicely - had to wait a while to be served as the staff were having a 'team briefing' out the back. Wandered back to see what the damage would be for an on the day upgrade - 1049 for cash or 435 plus 20,000miles.....didn't seem worth it given that we had only paid about 470 for the return PE ticket.
Had a nice relaxing time in the lounge including a few cocktails and then dinner. They had a full menu today, with several specials and sandwiches. Last time it had been busier and a lot of things had 'sold out'. Had noticed that when I went back to ask about upgrades that the passenger list for the VS46 flight had only a half-full upper cabin, 25 in a 62 seat PE cabin and a half-full economy. I had a lovely black bean and ham (supposed to be chirzo) soup, cheesburger and fries and then apple crumble with ice cream. Having been well looked after, the flight was called an hour before departure. At this point, the staff went into close down mode and started clearing everything away.
Security was relatively quick, although some people still don't understand the rules about liquids! Down to the gate, and en route a call for the last remaining passengers as the flight was closing. Arrived there to an empty gate and straight onto the plane and into our seats. PE must have been about half-full on the return trip, and I think that economy was also not that busy.
Quickly offered a pre-departure drink and hoped for an early departure. Unfortunately, I think someone had left a mobile in their case as this had to be found and sorted.....which took about 30 minutes (over-heard the captain telling the FSM that the bag wouldn't be on the flight as a result....poor person!).
For once it was a fast taxi to the runway and straight off (not the previous hour hanging around on the ground). Post-take off drinks offered very fast, along with more pretzels. I had planned to sleep after take-off and not eat again, so have no idea what the food was like. The menu sounded really nice - chicken in BBQ sauce, red bliss mashed potato and roasted corn medley or shrimp and scallops with sticky rice and buttered veggies! Scallops in PE - that must be a first!!
Managed to get to sleep relatively quickly and slept for pretty much all of the flight. No idea what the entertainment was like - only listened to classical music to help me sleep. Missed the breakfast run (seemed that people were offered muffins/shortbread, fruit and then hand wrapped warmed cookies).
Landed only a little late and then a taxi around the airport to the gate. Immigration empty and the bags were off really quickly - upper tagged bags mixed with the crew ones. We were the first ones off VS10 to make it to the revivals lounge!
A really good flight - had plenty of sleep in PE and didn't miss not having a flat bed!
