Keith Floyd

Last night I watched a programme on Channel 4 'Keith meets Keith', a documentary about Keith Floyd by Keith Allen. Today it is announced that he has died. The great man inspired my interest in cooking.

RIP.

Very sad, I also liked him and his cooking shows.

Also Patrick Swayze died too! RIP

I found last night's programme deeply disturbing as it brought back memories of a very close relative whose behaviours were the same. I wasn't quite sure what it thought it was achieving, except to be car crash tv.

That said, I loved Floyd's cookery shows as they had a real joie de vivre about them.

Unfortunately I can't agree with the 'thumbs up' here. Occasionally playing the bon viveur all well and good, but consider how he finished up. Yes, he said it was his life and it was how he wanted to live it but that's just self serving nonsense often peddled by those with an out of control alchohol addiction. It ignores the devastating effect it has on those around them, family and friends alike, who end up either having the burden of supporting them in their behaviours and seeing them deteriorate or feeling the guilt of making a break.

Repeated hospital trips with someone A&E won't treat until they sober up, seeing erstwhile friends avoid coming around, watching a life shrink to the next drink, an ill attended funeral and having a non repairable rift between siblings is all a bit too close and painful.

I enjoyed the program but it was sad to see how badly his health had deteriorated, partly age related but probably mainly through alcohol, I am sure.

Paul makes some good points above but I prefer to remember the excellent programs and what was ground breaking broadcasting at that time. He was a great cook and an excellent entertainer.

I must admit to being a little uncomfortable with the liberal use of the 'c' word, I appreciate the broadcast was after the water shed and yes, we are all adults, heaven knows I swear enough, but I thought that a little out of order as the word is highly offensive to most females I know.

As mentioned by Dom, also sad to see Patrick loose his fight with cancer.

I like Keith Floyd for what he was, non-conformist, individual, outspoken, talented, prepared to do something different. That doesn't mean I approved of everything he did or lived through. That said - all of our lives would be poorer if everybody ate and drank moderately, encouraged anyone with a different point of view to toe the line, dressed in black, did not write a book / play / song that broke the mold, became a compromiser, drove a Prius, architected square buildings ......

For all of these things; even if they do sometimes lead to a life of misery, or pain, or ill health, or whatever; they represent the colour that makes humans often interesting and lead to our richness of creativity.

So I thank the Keith Floyds of this world.

Fully agree about conformity. It would be a *very* grey world.

My point was more to do with the fact that the misery, pain and ill health is often shared around liberally with no thought or concern for the impact on others.
