Better chance of decent seat at physical check in?

I'm flying on VS045 on the 7th Oct. At the moment, the Choose You Seat options that are given are pretty rubbish - a few towards the back near the WC's. Will this selection change nearer the flight or should I wait until I get the CI on the day?

I usually wait until the gate and request an exit row, but just in case I don't get one I don't to get stuck somewhere!

Any ideas?

I would say your best bet would be OLCI, and then try as well when you get to the airport if you can't get anything better.

You get more, though not not necessarily 'better', options at OLCI as only a certain percentage (60%?) of seats are available for assignment using the 'Choose Your Seat' option. The remainder, save for exit rows, bulkheads and those that are sold as having extra legroom are made available at OLCI @ T-24 hours. This last summer I did manage to get better seats at OLCI than I'd managed to get up until that point through 'Choose Your Seat'.

Whilst doing OLCI doesn't guarantee you that a better seat will be available, it is still worth doing for the chance that there MIGHT be better seats available. If you leave it just until the airport then a load of 'better' seats could have been selected by other pax at OLCI leaving you with no choice at all when you physically check in.

Plus by doing OLCI you are at least confirming your current seat request.

I guess I'll have to wait until OLCI is open on the flight. 24hrs before I think?

Yep.

Just an update - went to the seat picker around 11am today (a few hours before OLCI opens) and the seats were wide open to choose from - ended up getting 32C which should put me in a good position to hope up to 31 for the exit row should it be free.
