Hold back, why dontcha? [:p]

I was having a discussion about this with Decker this week, particularly the rip off wine lists with their four times plus gouge. I just hope that this recession will bring some correction in that department.

Sorry - but I hate all the hype around him.

I agree with you and Decker, and as Decker knows only too well, I appreciate good food and good wine and am more than preperared to pay for that quality but I detest being ripped off in the name of trend for a substandard dining experience. I think now is the time that people are paying more attention to where they spend their and the likes of Ramsay will feel the pain as the N-R will stay away and the more traditional eateries will continue to flourish.

I'm a pathological food & drink person. I've never been to a Ramsay place. As a youngster, I could not afford it. These days I'm just not interested. St John appeals to me. In general, though, I have a lot more appreciation for people who keep their food 'empires' in check. I don't doubt Ramsay's talent - but to me when you spread yourself you will by necessity rely on your name as a marketing tool, regardless of what you deliver. I spend days cooking food, and I trust myself to do it, not other folks.

I'm sure GR has a good chip-on-shoulder story to tell, but it all feels like he's way more interested in getting his own back at the world than he is in cooking me something. Keller has three restaurants within 10 minutes of one another, and one in NY where he has closed circuit comms with the French Laundry.

HG, totally with you. These are good times for taking stock. I sure hope people pay attention, and realize what Ramsay's selling, vs others. And let's not get into the topic of wine list markups [:)]

Have to admit I found GR London Hollywood to be better food than French Laundry and a LOT cheaper...

I too found the French Laundry a disappointment. However GR on Royal Hospital Road has never disappointed me whereas I thought Maze was terrible and GR at Claridges underwhelming.

Went to the River Cafe last week and it's as good as ever btw.

The one and only time I ventured into Plane Food at T5 proved to be a 'terminal' experience.

Arrived at 1050, and asked to order something.. I forget what I fancied exactly, but it was a toasted sandwich or some such. Was refused the order, and chastised like a schoolboy that 'only breakfast items were available' ie a cooked breakfast or nothing. Apparently, they only offer 'lunch' items after 11am. [ii]

I walked out, and picked up a sandwich from Pret a Manger downstairs, which was yummy.

Never been back to Plane Food.
