Virgin Atlantic are officially 20 years old today. Press announcement below;

Last week Sir Richard Branson also marked the occasion by successfully setting a new Guinness World Record for completing the fastest crossing of the English Channel in an amphibian vehicle in a Gibbs Aquada.

When we started our first service in 1984 from Gatwick to Newark, no one predicted that we would still be here in 2004. Twenty years on we have a fleet of 29 beautiful aircraft flying to 22 destinations worldwide and yesterday we were able to confirm that we’ll launch services to and from Sydney via Hong Kong from this December.

“One of the reasons why we have not only survived, but also thrived, is because of the loyalty and commitment of our staff. Everyone who has worked for the airline over the past twenty years has made a special contribution and should feel proud that the airline has reached this landmark.

“I would also like to thank the 40 million passengers who’ve flown with us. We promised you a fun, high quality airline, offering innovation and value when we launched in 1984 and will continue to pledge this for the next twenty.”

Virgin Atlantic launched its first service on 22 June 1984 with one aircraft and one route, Gatwick to Newark. Two decades on Virgin Atlantic flies to 22 different destinations worldwide as far apart as San Francisco and Shanghai with a fleet of 29 aircraft. Virgin also owns leading UK holiday tour operator, Virgin Holidays, and has substantial cargo operations.

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 to provide a high quality, value for money service and to make the experience of flying more fun. Throughout its history Virgin has always aimed to offer a unique travelling experience and has revolutionised many aspects of air travel for both business and leisure passengers. It was the first airline to provide all economy passengers with individual television screens and the first to offer business class passengers innovations such as stand-up bars onboard, on board therapists offering massages and beauty treatments, complimentary limousines to and from the airport and Drive Thru Check In facilities.

Twenty years on Virgin Atlantic continues to innovate with the roll out of its new Upper Class Suite. The Upper Class Suite consists of a reclining leather seat for take off, a place to sit and eat a proper meal opposite your partner, the longest fully flat bed in the world with a proper mattress for sleeping on, a private onboard bar to drink at with your friends, a private massage room and four limousines per return trip – all at a price thousands of pounds less than other airline’s First Class.

Following Richard Branson’s successful record attempt last week the airline is also planning to offers it Upper Class passenger an ‘aqua limo’ service to and from Heathrow airport using Gibbs Aquada later this year.

The UCS really is not that far off of BA first class.VS have far better lounges,BA has better booze,slightly better onboard food,seats are both good,service as always is down to the crew on the day both can be spectacularly good or bad.

Think I was flying Dan Air to Sicily 20 years ago!!!!!

If it makes y'all feel any better, 20 years ago, I was 12 years old, and had only taken 1 flight - Britannia to Tenerife when I was 8 :D:D

Twenty years ago I was just about to turn 4. It would be 4 years until my first flight - a longhaul with BA to MCO and 6 years until my first Virgin flight, to LAX. Any other member here travel with Virgin at a younger age? (10 yrs old).

Like many my age (!) first flights were by turbo-props out of Luton to Majorca on a package holiday when the V-form existed. Now I reflect on my 9 year-old son's record of VS flights, which already takes in MCO (3x), MIA, LAX, SFO, BGI and SLU (and not a single FC mile for all that travel!).

Having flown both UCS & BA first in the last couple of months I feel I am qualified to say in my opinion there really is not a lot between the 2 products. I am not a VS sycophant or a BA hater I have used both airlines and numerous others in every class over the last 20 years.I would not compare J2000 to BA first as its not in the same league but UCS is.I do not know if VS crews are so proud of the new product that they are bending over backwards service wise but the VS crew were every bit as good as the BA first FAs who were exceptional.Only time will tell if VS keep up these high standards of service.To me the factor that will always be different between the 2 products is the elitism than comes with flying F and not J.

So have I, but of course you are welcome to your opinion. Personally I find the service and amenities on the ground and in the air on BA and SQ First class to be better than VS. For business class I go out of my way to fly VS, but you'll find me using cheap I-fares for BA FIRST ex-Lisbon to the US when they are available.

Mine was the first year VS started on the LHR-LAX route, can't remember the date, though I'm pretty sure it was 1988. Been hooked ever since [^]

I remember taking a Dan Air Comet from Gatwick into Tenerife North, it was before that horrific crash occured, we had a great flight and a really smooth touch-down. Must have been in 1972 or 73 I guess but now I'm showing my age :D

Going on holiday with my parents we were due to land at the north airport the day after the crash.The flight was rerouted to Grand Canaria and a ferry took us across the extremely choppy water.The airport was open on our return all the burnt wreckage was visible pushed to the side of the tarmac quite a sight.

Yes it must have been pretty awful knowing all those poor souls had perished, glad it didn't put you off flying Chris. I was with the first missus and some friends we stayed in an hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, Las Aguilas I think it was - oh well, much water under the wing since then :)

LOL - yeah, that'd be about right (it was actually the last time I got to go in the cockpit!) :D

On the subject of the Tenerife crash, ISTR that that was back in 1977 and even in 1980 when we went, there was still evidence of it around the runway (not too sure these days though, that was so long ago!).

I think the north is still open but only used for military traffic now.We never flew into the north again the Reina Sofia must have opened soon after the crash.

My fist flight was 19 years ago
Flew in Aug to Malta (Air Malta boing 707!)
I remember thinking this was so great!
Ironically I cant remember my first VS flight! it was in 1998 i think but cant rember where!

My fist UC however was barbados in 2002!:D

They still use it for commercial, BMI were flying there several times a week up to 31 March this year when they changed their schedule, they were alternating the daily LHR flight between the north and the south.

BTW I think the have re-christened Reina Sofia Aeropuerto, Tenerife Sol, I preferred the old handle. The south handles much more traffic esp the charters.
