Hey Pear Tree

I have a question for you! I fly UC a lot to LAX and the a few times i have had the same main meal (sorry how sad and boring is that!) but when it has come out the presentation on different flights is the exact same. In fact even when i come out on any flught the meals what great presentation. Do Virgin Cabin Crew get told how to present the food at traing? Also do you haev to be a member of cabin crew for so many uears before you can go into the UC cabin.

Thanks for your help

I will think of more questions too! hehe!

Hello Jon123297 ,
Good question :) , all the meals come in foil containers , and are put into carts and loaded onto the aircraft . And the galley crew member has to count all the meals and make sure the catering is correct to the passenger load .

Once we take-off , the crew should come round and ask you what you would like for lunch/dinner . Once we have asked all the passengers we then go to the galley and give the galley operator (galley witch ) our orders and hope that all our passengers get there first choice , personally I hate telling passengers we dont have there first choice . and if we dont have a passengers first choice we would ask passengers who have been upgraded , to choose another meal , the order is staff, silver card and then gold card members , you should be ok ;) .

To work in the upper class cabin most crew members would have done , three and half years in the main cabin , unless we are short of seniors that day . The most senior cabin crew member in the main cabin would have to work up , which is good for experience . And the preparation of meals in the galley is hard on a busy flight and we use a booklet , that has pictures of the meals explains how long they should be heated and how presentation of the meal should look , its fun working in the galley as you fell like a chef at 35 000 feet .

And the seniors course is 4 days , where we get taught about different wines and which region they come from , and about the general service in the upper class cabin .

Hello , we get a passenger list that tells us who is flying club members and who has been upgraded , and the seat that you get is the one that is available, and if the flight is not full , you can change seats !! .

Hi, peartree

I understand that the food in economy is cooked in a oven, but im wondering..? Does F/A's that work in UC have to do the same in economy to warm up the food, or is it a different way?

(Sad question, i know[:I])

Hi peartree,

Great inside info, we got upgraded at ANU approx 30seconds before boarding, (didnt have time to tell the inlaws till we stopped at the first steps to UC and they continued to PE)he he. So even then the FA would know we were op upgrades? not that it matters as we were treated like gods, well thats the VS service.[8D]

Jackets back BEFORE landing.

Heres one that bugged me on both legs this week - why do the VS staff bring you your jacket back whist we are still 'staked' IE some 30 mins before we land - on the return leg a number of us hung the jacket on the 'hook' thing on the side of the seat in front - this caused the crew to collect them all up and stow then back in the wardrobe[:o)]

Just wondering

I'd presumed that it was to allow people to 'make their escape' quickly as soon as the doors are and because the crew have other duties to perform on landing.

I'm sure Helen is right and the reason the crew collected them again is because there mustn't be anything loose around on TO or Landing that might impede the evacuation of the aircraft in an emergency. So if you want your jacket you need to put it on.

Hello JohnD ,
The hock on the front of each seat is only for inflight use ,
And the procedures are when we give back jackets for landing ,
the passengers jacket must be worn or stowed in overhead locker .
Why ? passengers expectation to have there jackets before landing to speed
up their disembarkation .

The first time I flew UC it was an upgrade from Y class (and, yes, Richard Mannion, it can happen more often than being invited to Necker island!!). To the eternal credit of the crew, we were all treated with great care and attention, just as much as the UC-paying passengers.

My [?] concerns layovers. On my last trip to LAS - out on Wednesday, back on Sunday - it was the same crew[:0] Is it really not possible for them to work in the interim e.g. fly to LAX or SFO and crew a flight to LHR?

Well most crew request these trips as they are long layovers ,
EG..2-4 days and I enjoy going to vegas for that reason

Hi Galgorm

Personally I hate being told to 'remain comfortably seated' [:(!] If i've been sitting in an economy seat for the last 10hrs with my knees jammed up against the seat infront then i think i'll decide whether i'm comfortable or not!!

A question though: is there a rule about using cameras on take-off or landing? Are they included in the list of electronic things not to use?

Cheers

Its very exspensive for crew to position on other airlines to other cities when there simply is no need for it.

Its operationaly better for the crew to work to and return from the destination they flew too.

Its also a nightmare for crew legality and if a flight is delayed and the crew are in the wrong place its just does not make sense.

My guess about the electronic items thing is to prevent the use of distracting items - personal stereos, laptops, games, etc. - which may impede exit or distract the passenger from their surroundings in an emergency.

I don't think a camera is too distracting or impeding.

It's probably a relative of the reason that the cabin lights are dimmed/blacked out during takeoff/landing in the darkness - it's so that passengers are not night-blind in an emergency evacuation. I personally prefer the cabin dim/dark most of the time in any case, and I like to look out of the windows!

Cheers!

A little question that has always intriged me since my first flight, Heathrow -> Seattle on BA. Just before take-off while the cabin crew are doing their checks and preperations they are told to put doors in "Automatic and cross-check". What does automatic mean? Whats the difference between Manual and Automatic?

Foz :o)
