Operations

I found out yesterday from the Doc that I've got a Pilonidal Sinus (god it's embarrassing), and has put me on a course of antibiotics which if they don't work then it's back to the Doc and probably referral after that for for surgery to have it removed.

I'm scared about having to go under the knife since it would be my first time, and I don't know how to get the thought of surgery out of my mind. How does everybody else handle the potential worry of having to go under the knife?

Piece of cake. I've had all sorts of lovely things removed -- both under anasthesia and not -- and the quality of medical science is so excellent that everything has worked out swimmingly. Have no fears, in my opinion, and good luck!

By the way, he's shy, but ask Bazz about his recent surgery to look more like Tom Cruise...

It didn't work and now I am suing, I knew it was a mistake to go to GJ's specialist. [:p]

With the op's I have had done the biggest pain is the day/night before, nothing to eat [:#]...other than that if it is under general anesthesia just take it from me..the IV is a pain...but the first rush of whatever they use to knock you out...yeah baby give me give me give me [y]

Hi VS075, I'm stuck in San Francisco at the moment, after having 10.5 hrs of facial surgery last Wednesday, I hate going under anaesthesia too, I look like sh*t, but I came out the other end and I'm just fine, that apart form my short term memory, You'll be fine. Also Diazepam works wonders too.

Hey VS 075 I've HAD the op to clear out the old sinuses.

Now, if you were anything like me your nose would constanly be blocked and sleeping would be difficult. I used to need about two litres of water at the bedside to quench my dry mouth as it was the only way I could breath lying down.

My life was TRANSFORMED once I had it done and under general anasthetic you won't feel a thing. The packing they stick up your hooter to stem the blood flow is a wee bit uncomfy when you wake up but it'll be out within a day.

I dont know anything about your condition but if its something thats causing discomfort just look forward to being rid of it.

VS075's problem is at the other end [:0],
I have had 3 ops under general(my nose took a right battering at rugby),the apprehension before hand is not pleasant but a little worry and discomfort is all well worth it to be problem free.

Don't panic Alex, I've been out cold for a couple of ops (the first time when I was your age to get rid of the old tonsils) and like the others have said the thought of it (especially your first one) is much worse than the reality. Sure you might feel a bit crappy when you first wake up but just think of all the women in nurses uniforms pampering you[;)]

Hope you manage to get yourself sorted one way or the other[y]

I've had the old flexible sigmoidoscopy (camera up the rear to the layman) which wasn't exactly pleasurable but I've been sending Xmas cards to the surgeon ever since!! [:p]

Like I said I'm hoping that the antibiotics work because although you (and the members who PMd me) have reassured me greatly, it's just the whole going under the knife thing that I can't get off my mind and what lifestyle changes I would have to temporarily make (like time off college, part-time job, other things).

I'm thinking very little of the prospect of the op, and until the Doc says I have to go in for surgery I'm just getting on with my life and staying positive.

I will keep you all posted on what happens after the course of antibiotics have been taken, and thanks again for your support.
