You can now use your own laptop lead and tip on all aircraft.

As always leads and tips will be onboard for you to use from the crew.

Apparently not, but since they never carried a lead for an Apple Powerbook I didn't have a lot of option

Strangely, although I'm now aware that I shouldn't have been using my own, no one in the crew ever stopped me (and I wasn't trying to do it covertly, since I wasn't aware of the restriction...)

I gave up asking for those Empower leads very soon after Delta was one of the first to install them around 1998/9. For about six months they carried them onboard then one day I turned up and they said they no longer carried them so I purchased my own.

I assumed you were meant to bring your own.

I've been using my own for some time - I remember the small coasters that used to be in the LHR Clubhouse with the number for you to call if you wanted to buy one!

What leads do people recommend, and where is the best place to buy one. I was on a BA-NCW (pah) flight last year, and in flight, was told it was cost GBP100-ish. Needless to say I watched TV and slept on that flight... Ideally, any lead I purchase should work on both VS and "other" carriers (just in case...)

I think 'EmPower' is the standard for inflight power connectors, and the ones carried onboard the VS flights is the Targus brand (or at least it was the last time I checked!). The Targus Universal kit includes all the power 'tips' you'll need, plus the EmPower connector and a cigarette-lighter adaptor for use in the car.

In the case of my Universal kit, it didn't include the Apple Powerbook tip, but after a call to Targus, they just sent one out FOC.

I'm guessing you'll be able to pick up a Targus kit at all of the major online retailers, or at the airport; although it's probably cheaper to by one in the US on your next visit

I use a Targus air/auto power adapter. http://www.targus.com. This plugs into the standard airline socket and also has an adapter to use a car cigar lighter socket. It comes with a selection of tiplets for various laptops. You also need to be aware that the tiplet is not simply for the size/type of laptop socket, but also provide voltage control.

I seem to remember that it cost me $119 in CompUSA during one of my US trips. Most airports will have a shop somewhere that will sell these sort of thing - cheaper than BA onboard:D

I'm now confused as I have always been able to get a tip and lead on Virgin flights for my Powerbook. I still have my Targus set that I carried " just in case" but have never needed it.
Does anyone know if all PE seats will eventually have laptop power?

That's the long-term plan. Laptop Power and V:port as standard, but it's very long term!

I'm surprised that VS haven't come up with a way of shoehorning an EmPower socket into the old PE seats yet.
