Nick, when you say that you are a believer in Global Warming, do you mean man-made global warming? Do you discount the possibility that the planet could be warming but not because of wnything that we are doing?

Just wanted to clarify - too many people simply say Global Warming when they mean man-made GW.

I'd just like to put this in here, because I feel like some of the posts are a bit hazy in this regard: although I think all these green taxes are absurd, I am still a staunch believer in Global Warming. I think there are a lot of sensible things we can all do to help the environment that won't cost us much, if anything. I just think all these taxes aren't actually helping anyone, especially the environment.

One side note, all Silverjet tickets include a carbon-offset tax and you can't remove it.

And is that in addition to APD and all the other taxes?????

Please don't turn this thread into a global warming debate. Yes I believe and I know that humans are affecting global warming and I obviously know about natural warming/cooling trends but you must realize that 'global warming' is not just 'warming', it's more advanced than that.

Apologies, Nick, you are absolutely right, this is not the place for that debate.

Incidentally, while I've not been around, I've been working on a couple of websites that it appears you may just like.

Try http://www.mardaletimes.com, especially the 'global warming news' and the t-shirt shop.

Also, since it came up, see our new plans to top carbon offset at http://www.childneutral.com

But yes, I can't see any of these 'green' taxes doing anything to improve anyone's life, especially if it turns out that the planet goes through cycles of getting warmer and cooler anyway.

Which it clearly has done historically anyway. Why is it so many people realise that?

17 Degs warmer in London
A blanket of moist, warm air over Britain yesterday brought a rapid change from the wintery conditions of Wednesday. Temperatures registered on the roof of the Meteorological office London last night and early this morning were the highest for the time of year since records began there in 1940. At 10 o`clock last night the thermometer registered 60 degrees and at midnight 61 degrees compared with 44 degrees 24 hours previously. It still stood at 61 degrees at 2am.

From the front page of the Daily Telegraph - 21st November 1947.

Just out of interest, the forecast for the 22nd of November 1947 was mild and cloudy.

Which reminds me of one of my favourite lines from my favourite Ealing comedy, Passport to Pimlico. Two men are digging at a bombed out site and one says to the other:

'Cor, it's hot today.'

'They say it's over 90 on the Air Ministry roof!'

'Well then, stay off the Air Ministry roof!'

Simpler times...but it still makes me laugh out loud.

OK, sorry... [:I]

Last year the newspapers would have had us believe that the end of the world was here as the snow had failed to show on the slopes of Europe. Doomesday stories of hoteliers going under and not being able to obtain insurance if they were below a certain altitude. Yet more proof of global warming.[:0]
This year the snow has arrived two weeks early and not a mention. Global warming must have stopped then.[:?]

Some interesting new calculations and figures from Defra:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/cli ... dology.pdf

Down near the bottom of these figures are the actual amounts of CO2 produced when a single person travels 1km by different forms of transport.

Average Petrol Car 210gm
Small Diesel Car 151gm
Small Hybrid eg Prius. 126gm

OK that all seems reasonable
But now look at these:
Longhaul Jet (only 80% full) 105gm
Domestic flight (only 2/3rds full) 158gm

If the domestic flight were full Ð it only produces 103gms Ð less than a Prius
If we cannot get more people to travel in each car perhaps we should save the planet by persuading more people to fly instead
Bill (very tongue in cheek!)

I managed to contribute around 16 tons of Co2 this year using the guide in the onboard mag, I have to say I quite happy with this figure and dont feel the need to offset. I dont subscribe to this save the planet by spending more of my own cash culture.

Must get a good nights sleep......
