Because I said to pjh I would, I have written a review of Bruce Springsteen at the O2 Arena in London last night, and here it is for anyone who is interested:

This was my first visit to the O2 and I have to say that, apart from a couple of small niggles, my impressions were very favourable. My niggles first the queue for the standing area was somewhat chaotic. People had to walk through the queue to get to the back of it hence a lot of people didnt bother walking to the back, they just queue jumped at the point it went over the walkway! Secondly, I was not allowed to take a plastic bottle of diet coke into the arena, but they were selling bottles of Stella inside. [?]

They were the moans, but the transport system, the bars and restaurants, the facilities and most importantly, the acoustics were all spot on. It will no doubt be the major UK indoor concert venue for many years to come. [y]

On to the concert, Bruce and the E Street Band came on stage at just after half past eight, and played a brilliant set lasting well over two and a half hours. It is amazing to think that the musicians I saw on stage were, for the most part, the same people I saw at Stafford Bingley Hall way back in 1981! The only differences were the additions of Nils Lofgren and Suzie Tyrell on guitar and violin respectively. And Danny Frederici was replaced on the organ by a chap I didnt recognise.

The music was brilliant from start to finish.

The set was :

Radio Nowhere
No Surrender
Night
Lonesome Day
Gypsy Biker
Magic
Reason To Believe
Because The Night
She's The One
Livin' In The Future
The Promised Land
Waitin' On A Sunny Day
Working On The Highway
Racing In The Street
Devil's Arcade
The Rising
Last To Die
Long Walk Home
Badlands

Encore:

Girls In Their Summer Clothes
Jungleland
Born To Run
Dancing In The Dark
American Land
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

People who know Springsteens music will see that there is a great variety of old and new, with a high percentage of songs from the Born to Run album being featured.

There were lots of highlights. Bruce was on fine form, as usual, and had the audience in the palm of his hand throughout the evening. The band were as tight as ever, it is really interesting to watch how they all watch Bruce intently as he controls their timing in the same way as a conductor controls a symphony orchestra.

I am a big fan of Nils Lofgren and he seemed to enjoy himself more than on recent tours, being given big solos in an up-tempo Reason to Believe and, more especially, in Because the Night. Throughout the show Bruces hatred of George W Bush shone through and there were several songs dedicated to him.

The show was great, but the best bits were all in the encore. Clarence was magnificent in his mammoth sax break in Jungleland, and then Born to Run and Dancing were both played with the house lights full up and Bruce had the 20,000 people standing, dancing, singing and clapping along. American Land is a good rocker and then the inevitable Santa Claus closed the show.

I was tired out and hoarse at the end of the show, so I have no idea how Bruce does it, night after night tour after tour. All in all, a great night.

If anyone has managed to read this far, thanks for indulging me. [:D]

Great TR, tha...[:I]

Sounds like an excellent show, and I am green with envy. As well as the songs and musicianship, he really does have a showman's skill of making the biggest arena feel like a small club.

The O2 had a +ve writeup in yesterday's Guardian too...

Nick, I keep forgetting that you are such a big music fan. And if one is to be a music fan, your selection of Bruce Springsteen earns top marks from me. He's great.

Thanks for taking the time to bring us all into the venue with you -- your TR was really terrific.

OH Nick I am soooo jealous! About twenty years or so ago I saw Bruce in Leeds on the Born in the USA tour. It was a hot sunny day and we turned up without tickets. This really nice guy [:?] sold us tickets but as we were about to enter the gates, a security guy told us the tickets were fake! I burst into tears and he clearly felt sorry for me, so he escorted us both to the front row! OMG front row (standing) for Bruce. It was 4th July and totally awesome. I was leaping around all over and remember my very old washed out jeans split right across my butt, but I didn't care. I seem to recall a guy hoisting me up on his shoulders, revealing my knickers to anyone behind me. It took about four hours to get out of the car park at the end, but everyone was just out partying and dancing, and left the cars standing! Oh those were the days.

Thanks for the review Nick.

I've seen Bruce twice - The Renuion Tour at Earls Court and the Unplugged Tour at the Albert Hall.

The Reunion was a great gig - can't beat a bit of Clarence[oo]

Glad you had a good time

I'm slowly working my way through the various forums, & have only just read this excellent review [:)]

The O2 concert couldn't be fitted in with our plans, so we flew over to Belfast on the preceeding Saturday, where he had almost every one of the 15,500 crowd on their feet for the whole of the set.

Danny Frederici had be replaced on the organ so that he could take time out for treatment of melanoma. His replacement was Charles Giordano, who was very much a part of the previous years Seeger Sessions band.

Now we just have to wait for the Millenium Stadium gig next June!

Thanks to all for taking the time to read the post, and for the kind words.

Having 'done' the O2, I wasn't going to bother with the next round, as I am never a fan of Stadium gigs.

Thinking about it since, I have convinced myself that this will probably be the last tour of the whole band, so have changed my mind a bit.

I didn't put it in the first post, but Clarence was clearly having a lot of trouble moving around the stage. His walk was slow and laboured and when he came to play the big heavy (tenor?) sax, he didn't lift it off its stand. I am guessing back pain. [:#]

When you think about it, they are getting on a bit now. I know the Stones and a few other bands are still going well into what we used to term 'old age', but I wonder how much longer he will want to do it. I also have to admit that, the E Street Band without 'The Big Man' just wouldn't seem right.

That's the trouble with all these bookings.... easy to forget which year is which!

Haven't seen The Boss do a stadium gig for more years than I care to remember, so it will be interesting to see how it compares with the arena tours.
