We used to have the super magnets at secondary school in our science labs. We'd pinch them and take them to the IT lab to try and ruin the monitors [:D]

There was something on the telly a few weeks back about toys that contained those uber powerful rare earth magnets, where kids would swallow them and then all hell brakes loose in the digestion department, in some instances with near-fatal results and with invasive surgery needed to remove them.

I think I might have swallowed some many years ago. Raising myself from the bedsprings in the morning has never been easy.

I have been 'fishing' in recent life for discarded welding rods and assorted nuts and bolts inside coils in furnaces using super powerful magnets.
Great Idea we initially thought as most of the coils are made from super exotic non ferrous materials...except for the first bit - which nearly had our fingers off as the magnet rushed towards it at with enough force to drag a grown man with it [:?]

You can get hold of small and rather powerful magnets if you take apart your hard drive.

In my day, magnets had no effect whatsoever on the blackboard let alone the milk monitor[:I][}:)][:I]

In my day, magnets had no effect whatsoever on the blackboard let alone the milk monitor[:I][}:)][:I]

I was a custard monitor for a week. Strange how I was never asked to do it again. Gained 2 stone though.

Lurching back on track. Maplin do some rare earth ones for a fiver. Might be worth a look.

Regretfully/Happily I am no longer in Primary School... ahhh memories of collecting silver foil for guide dogs... g-d knows what they did with it...

And the Blue Peter can collections - we used to turn up at school with tens of bin liners of coke cans every week. And then, funnily enough, use powerful magnets to sort the aluminum from the steel cans.

In more recent life, I used to laugh at the old people who follow you around the streets of Chinese cities waiting for you to finish your Plastic bottled drink, and then either pester you directly for the bottle, or rummage through the bin you just put it in.
I guess they are neither doing it for the guide dogs, or the Keep China Tidy campaign.... But in truth they are no different from how I used to be with the can collections, just to make sure I got more than my mates [:o)]
