BBC News Story.

People who flew with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic between 11 August 2004 and 23 March 2006 may be entitled to a refund of 10 per flight.....

This is as a result of a law suit in the US following the price fixing on fuel surcharges.

This is really interesting stuff. The article seems to be a bit unclear. Was the figure reached as an out of court settlement or not? If it was not then I am struggling to see how a US court can ensure that British based customers are paid.

It says the law firm expects to sign the agreement today, so I assume it is an out of court settlement; in which case the airlines could agree to compensate UK pax.

Cynically I can't help thinking that due to the massive admin costs of processing such small refunds, the only real winners are going to be the lawyers. (again)

It could be argued that the punitive cost to the airlines will stop them doing it again, but the fines BA were given will probably do that.

I have just worked out that I took six return flights with VS during this time, one of which was a reward flight, but I still can't get too excited about it.

The other question is how do you claim the money? Are they going to insist on proof such as booking ref or are they going to search their records for your flight details and contact you?

By my reckoning I have a bout £60 to come and I'm sure others here have much more due.

Interesting, will get messy when it comes to who actually should be getting the refund (say if someone was travelling on business).

But Nicks' right, it is the lawyers that win here. The admin costs, and overall costs are going to hurt VS particualry hard as they don't have the massive profits that BA have to assist.

If this does come off I'm due about £120 for VS flights (I still have all my VS e-tickets) but no idea about BA flights as I dont keep anything from those.

I bet it will end up being a voucher for money off your next flight.

I'd rather get my VS in miles and am willing to do a deal to save the expense of them doing a refund in money [:w]

BA can pony up the dough!!

A lot of this will depend on they define 'refund'. They could be on sticky ground saying you have to have a money off voucher.

Is the £10 per sector or per return ticket purchased?

If it's per return ticket purchased, I can't see a massive percentage of people being bothered in claiming for it if they have only taken 1-2 flights per year.

If it's per sector, £20 return is little bit more appealing and worth the paperwork hassle that will no doubt follow. [:)]

I'm taking it as per sector otherwise it would ignore single tickets.

Mmm, well it easy for me to try and remember what flights I did during those dates via my full FC statement online. BA on the otherhand is going to be more tricky for me to try and remember, and there is a lot to remember.

The only proof I have for BA would be outbound date from my Passport and the route. They would then have to confirm from their records.

Considering my family and I use Virgin, the refund could be a couple of hundred pounds. I'll check the passports over the weekend.

£20 per return trip per person is going to add up to a fair amount. I wonder how they are going to ask you to prove you flew with them (both BA and Virgin)

Rather have miles as well, I mean the hastle of getting the cheques and then having to bank them, it's just not worth it and would be cheaper and easier to apply for VS.

Now saying 'website under construction'

BBC Story now saying 'The refunds will be worth one-third of the fuel surcharge, between about £1 and £11.50 for each flight' [:(]

Just checked my history (thanks Richard for reminding me about checking Exec Club history online) and I have 8 revenue VS sectors and 6 BA sectors.

Will this include reward sectors as well as we have paid the fuel surcharge on those too [:?]

Reading the FAQ on the lawyers site the ruling includes ticket bought through travel agents. I thought it was only going to be flights booked directly with the airline, that makes it slightly more appealing.

Statement from VS now on their website, basically saying that the court still needs to give its final approval before the settlement process can go live, the refunds will be between £2-£10 depending on how much surcharge you paid and NOT to call VS about it as they are not going to be involved in the refund process

I see the VS website is saying that all claims made will be via an independent administrator and only if the settlement receives final court approval.

Not quite sure how I'm going to prove I took flights during this time as flying club red statements only go back 1 year and I only tend to keep my Credit Card statements for the same period
