A lot depends on what you are looking for and how long you plan to be away?

Moving this to Travel as its more Travel than VS related ...

As someone who loves Hong Kong enough to want to move there, I can only sing the praises about the place, but to determine if its a good Honeymoon destination would depend greatly on what you like to do when you are away and how long you want to be there for?

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi All,

I plan to be away 7-10days. I would say we would like to relax, have romantic dinners etc. Or do you think Tokyo would be better?

Out of the two locations you have mentioned Hong Kong would win hands down for my $. It offers everything you have said you wanted - a real 'Island' of contrasts and has tastes for every budget.

We stayed at the Peninsula on our last trip partly based on comments from fellow v-flyers(it was our anniversary the day we arrived). The suite wasn't cheap but worth every penny IMHO. The service was incredible -I'd worried it would be stuffy but it wasn't at all.
If it's your honeymoon, something a bit special (even for just a couple of nights) will earn lots of brownie points [:)].

Decker and I have stayed in the MO Landmark a couple of times, and have loved it. The corner spa rooms are fantastic, and the toiletries are very good (just ask Fozzyo[:D]).

If you enjoy spa treatments, then I have to say that the Landmark Spa is probably the best I've ever been to.

The Landmark is now one of our favourite hotels too. [:D]

For a 7-10 day trip, you could do Hong Kong and Toyko, although i'd pin Hong Kong as the better destination for relaxing and fine dining. If it were me, i'd have 4 nights in the Landmark MO (in the corner suite with the huge round bath for two!) and 4 in the Tokyo MO, focus on Spa treatments and fine dining in Hong Kong (many V-Flyers can give you good restaurant recommendations for Hong Kong) then head off to Tokyo for 4 days of total culture madness - and more spa and fine dining. [:D]

Thanks,
Sarah

I'd caveat the Hong Kong recommendation by saying that I do know several people who really really did not like Hong Kong due to poverty etc. I know that it is a risk going anywhere new on a honeymoon in case you don't like it but it probably is something to consider with this type of choice.

I think that Hong Kong and Tokyo would be awesome. While in Hong Kong you can get a feel for the bustle that is clinging to the side of a mountain and then in Tokyo you can see the huge metropolitan sprawl and do some amazing things.
While you are in Japan, you can also arrange for a night out in the mountains near Mt Fuji staying in traditional accomodation on tatami mat floors with hot springs in the hotel etc. and then come back the next day on the bullet train so you get to experience that too.
There is so much to do in Japan you can stretch it out to weeks and months if you have the time!
PM me if you want some more info.

I have to agree with others that Hong Kong would be a better choice IMHO. I first travelled to Tokyo 20 years ago for work and hated it: I've never been so home sick in my life.

Hong Kong I first travelled to again with work but found it far more accessible.

I now travel to Tokyo about once every 12 months and love it: it's a place that I find grows on you, but at first I found it to be very difficult, especially anywhere outside the centre of Tokyo. There is much more of a language barrier in Tokyo when compared to Hong Kong.

Of course, like all sensible places, both Hong Kong and Japan drive on the left.

But I think that is a reason to go to Tokyo as a couple. I fully agree that Tokyo on your own is pretty rubbish. You end up just sitting in your room.

If you go with someone then you have so much more confidence to try things that you wouldn't do on your own, go into a restaurant that doesn't have an English menu, try and buy something from an old grannie in a corner shop, stuff that you could do easily in Hong Kong but you would have no fun.

Also, if you use a good agent who can give you a plan and line up somethings such as maybe a homestay for one night with a real Japanese family then it makes your trip completely different to a Lost in Translation style loner holiday. Also, if you are going to go all the way to the other side of the world, why would you want to stay in a generic 5 star hotel? Surely the whole point of going to another culture is to see how they do it rather than have the same bland (if excellent) service from a global company.

Hong Kong can be easy but Japan can be a lot more memorable IMHO.
