Pub Smoking Etiquette

(At the risk of getting lectures from one of those[:(!]people)

Last I was in the UK the smoking ban was about to go into place in pubs. At that time some pubs had signs that said no smoking at the bar. Here in the 'South' people have not gone totally nuts and you can find Smoking and non-smoking sections in Bars and Restaurants. Has the UK gone totally militant or can you still smoke in pubs?

I'm afraid smoking is banned indoors in virtually all public places in the UK. I beleive there are a few private members clubs that can allow smoking indoors, otherwise its outside on the patio in the wind and rain! (although some places do supply some kind of a shelter).

Prisons, the Scottish Parliament and the House of Commons bar are just about the only place you can smoke indoors now. Oh, the irony!

And may I say thank the Saviour Himself for the smoking ban. Even as an occasional 'sneak-a-smoker' (a couple a month) I abhor the clinging stench that followed me home from a night grooving at Cherry Jam, Plastic People, Notting Hill Arts Club, etc. I used to have to pack extra pairs of blue jeans and shirts simply to wear clubbing and then quarantine from the rest of my clothing in a heavy-duty yard waste bag due to the acrid smell of spent tobacco. Now, I can pack less and don't have to hang my clothing in the windows of my rooms at Claridge's to air out (for shame...they must have thought me from Humberside).

The ban is fantastic. Long may it reign.

In Soho, London, there is a cigar shop you are allowed to smoke in if you are 'sampling' the goods before purchasing them. Other then that all enclosed areas are now no smoking.

You can smoke in hotel rooms, provided it is a designated Smoking room.

I love non-smoking places. No need to take your clothes off as soon as you arrive home; at least due to smelling like smoke. That said, I do like the smokey bars...oddly sexy.

I think that over here in Ireland patients can smoke in long-term psychiatric facilities. Draw whatever conclusions you wish from the above [:w]

Wife and I ventured into Mansfield on a St George's day pub crawl and every pub stank of bleach or worse[:0] give me the fag smoke any day of the week.

And now summer has finally blessed us, we are returned to the irony of the smokers frowning upon the non smokers stealing all outside seats.
