It will not happen...I will not say ever...but the $45 million is just for the first environmental impact study for the first leg which would run from Las Vegas to Primm.

All good so far...however... there will be next to no ridership from Las Vegas to Primm...the powers that be are bound to build it on the west side of I-15 so ensuring that it cannot connect to the new airport and who is going to provide the funding to build it ?

California and Nevada won't, they are spending a small fortune upgrading I-15 right now. Buying the right of ways in Southern California will be murderously expensive. Getting the federal government to give up land so this thing wont have to bend every which way is another problem.

Just to many hurdles to clear.

And while I think about it.

Anaheim is probably one of the worst places to start this thing, deep in Orange County, expensive land to buy right there, they would bemuch better off moving it out to the Brea or Yorba Linda.

It would fit between the two highway lanes. But MAGLEV is still VERY expensive to build and operate.

It also doesn't need a driver so bin it I say!!!

Maglev trains are amazing to ride on! Stupidly fast speeds and the smoothest ride you'll ever go on. There should definitely be more of them.

And lets look at the finances of the worlds only operational Maglev line, not even breaking even if I recall.

Ummm - are you refering to the 'worlds only' operational one in Japan, or the 'worlds only' operational (and fastest) one in Shanghai?

Or maybe one of the many other community and non-commercial ones that exist around the world?

I just can't conceive of spending this kind of money on what is, as conceived, essentially an overpriced amusement ride. Nevertheless this proposal has been tossed around for years; I agree with Dave that it will be a long time getting built, however.

Disneyland has the political clout to ensure that it is the western terminus, but why here? If the powers that be are hell bent on doing this, why not make the Maglev a true transportation solution and have it terminate at one of the LA area's well situated transport exchanges. There is one at LAX, another in Santa Ana (about 15 minutes to the Magic Kingdom). Also in Orange County, the Amtrak station in Irvine has a good transportation center next to the tracks. Various rights of way already exist; for example, an express rail and truck corridor was built at great expense to carry freight from the West Coast's busiest port in Long Beach east to the massive rail yards in downtown LA. The Maglev could easily terminate near LAX, swing south to the rail corridor, then zoom eastward past downtown, out to Corona, and follow I-15 north to Vegas.

I should have added that the original proposal IIRC was a 'bullet' style train that would have done the trip in 2 hours or so.[y]
