Flying to US, if I put a tomtom or other electronics in my suitcase, what will the security screening people make of it. On the way back I'll use a TSA lock, but on the way out.........?
I wouldn't even dream of putting anything like that into checked baggage. I'd always carry it with me

Unfortunately, with all the laptop related stuff (and its a VERY heavy 'laptop'!), mobile, mp3 player, paperaback, travel wallet etc etc, my carry-on bag already weighs a ton, and I don't need the Tomtom till I'm out of the airport.
I always carry mine in hand baggage. If you need it at the airport, suppose your case with it in is delayed?
Remember, VS limit hand baggage weights to 6kg for Econ/PE and 8kg for Upper. It's not unknown for it to be weighed at check-in.

This is a problem for the modern day traveller - too much electronic gizmos! Regularly travel with lots of gizmo's, and of course they all need different chargers and power leads!! And of course most of this stuff takes up the majority of your hand luggage allowance - joy of joys.

Precisely why I'm looking to put the tomtom in the suitcase.[?]

Absolutely, quick check list for me is laptop, Bose, iPod, Blackberry, Camera ... plus all the accompanying leads although I do try to keep those down to a USB cable for charging as many as possible (albeit slowly from the laptop).
I also put bulky chargers in suitcases ... which works fine until your airline loses your luggage, which in thirty years of flying has only happened once so far.
There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

I too wouldn't dream of putting any electronic devices in checked luggage. If I think my cabin bag might be overweight I take any items out and either distribute amongst family or put as many as I can in my pockets. Once you've got the weight checked label on your bag put everything back.

I carry all the electrical stuff in hand luggage and then feel I have to take all the chargers as well to avoid the scenario whereby my suitcase is lost in transit and everything I am carrying becomes useless as soon as the charge runs out! A tad paranoid perhaps?
A purple boarding card, pre-booked cowshed treatment, glass of T10 with lime, a proper amenity kit, packet of polos and a Freedom Menu please!
