I'm just wondering whether anyone on here knows about or has experience of the downtoan check in with Singapore airlines, on Orchard Road in Singapore.

Basically we're flying on the A380 and would really like to bag some of the 'pair' window seats upstairs, and seen as OLCI isn't available to us due to our tickets, we're thinking using the downtown check-in 48 hours before is our best option.

The SQ website says that we will 'have to present baggage for acceptance' - does this mean that we would have to do without our suitcases once checked in?! [?]Don't think we'll bother until the day of the flight if this is the case!

What kind of tickets do you have? SQ accepts most tickets for OLCI e.g. paper or e-ticket. If your ticket was purchased from a travel agent or if it is a multi-trip ticket with different carriers you can still OLCI. Even with award tickets you may still OLCI. I have never had any problems with SQ OLCI in any of the above scenarios.

We have a great escapade RTW ticket bought through Virgin. I asked the customer services team at Virgin about OLCI for our VS flights and they said we can't do it because we have more than 4 sectors on the ticket and will have to check in normally at the airport, this is the same reason we can't look at seat maps etc on the Virgin website.

I had assumed that this would apply to all our flights with VS, SQ and NZ?

Not necessarily with SQ, although I've never tried SQ OLCI with a RTW ticket myself.

Using the downtown check-in service 48hrs prior to your flight won't be possible as it closes at 18:00hrs at the latest. Because SQ221 departs around 20:30 check-in for this flight will open 2.5 hours after downtown check-in closes.

Okay, so you now have two choices. Try OLCI at exactly T-48. Or if you don't want to risk that then turn up at Changi airport and check-in personally for your flight exactly 48hrs beforehand (check-in for all SQ flights from Changi is available 48hrs in advance). You can then obtain your boarding passes and check-in your luggage on the day of departure. It's all very simple.

Unfortunately for you, because SQ221 connects with other feeder flights from LHR and elsewhere, you should expect many passengers to have used OLCI and bagged the good seats way ahead of you as they can OLCI more than one sector with SQ, even ahead of the 48hr OLCI opening time.

Thanks for your help Strawberry Muppet - really useful info there.

Seems like we're on abit of a sticky wicket with regards to getting first pick of the seats!

I think we'll just try OLCI 48 hours before the flight, and if that fails then go to downtown check-in when it opens the following morning. Can't see my gf wanting to trek out to Changi just to check-in and come straight back, especially as we're staying on Orchard Road which the same as the downtown office!

At least we don't have to give them our suitcases at downtown, thought that sounded abit far-fetched!

Well, I hope you'll manage to OLCI for your flights without any problems and grab a pair of seats together on the upper deck, fingers crossed. Good luck and have a pleasant flight on the A380. [:)]
