Mobile phones/Caller ID question

At home I have a BT landline with caller ID meaning I tend to ignore any 'International', 'Out of Area' or 'Withheld' numbers that I get as most of these are usually cold calls.

When my parents go abroad and call me I see different things on my caller ID depending who calls me. They are both on the same mobile network (Virgin Mobile). When my dad calls me his mobile number/name shows up but when my mum calls me all I get is 'International' which means I sometimes miss calls from my mum (though she will leave me a voice mail)

I've had quite a few calls today from them both as they are having a few problems whilst on holiday in Europe (most of which are sorted now though thankfully)

When my mum calls me using her mobile in the UK, her number does show up OK. She's recently got a new handset too and I still see the same thing.

Anyone any ideas why I see a difference [?]

I *think* (dusting off memory here) it's all to do with the 'gateway' that the foreign carrier makes use of when you're roaming. Vodafone seem to pass through Caller ID no problem from abroad. T-Mobile (I think) used to have problems, showing either 'International' or a weird (unknown) foreign phone number, which the call is evidently routed through...

No idea why it'd be different for two phones on the same network (and presumably roaming to the same network also?).

Sounds like the issue is down to the international carriers used. Some support Caller Line Identity (CLI) and some don't. Either way CLI is never guaranteed as part of the service agreement. Some calls can go via 3, 4 or more carriers depending on traffic loads and time of day.

The differences can be down to number ranges or an number of other factors.

Yes they are both roaming in France at the moment (although not sure if they are roaming on the same networks)

I'm also on Virgin and find that when I roam, the network does change quite often especially in the US.

I guess it doesn't help matters in that Virgin piggy-back the UK T-Mobile network.
