Hey guys

So the final nerves are kicking in - I fly on Tuesday to the US for the first time and while I'm looking forward to it, I'm becoming more and more convinced I should try and get an upgrade from PE to UC. I have a non-refundable ticket and I'm wondering if I can upgrade and if so any idea how much it would cost from Heathrow to LAX?

I've never paid to upgrade a West-coast US flight from PE to Upper but last time I paid at the airport for an East-coast US upgrade it was £599 one-way, but that was about 4 years ago so dont expect it to be any less than that now.

You can upgrade virtually any revenue fare with cash at the airport just as long as there is space available.

I've paid that same fee twice now both from a PE 'K' fare and a V Hols issued PE 'H' fare (both low non-refundable fares).

It actually costs you less to pay to upgrade a low non-refundable fare as VS will upgrade you to an Upper Class lowest fare (Z, R or maybe a D if there are no Z or R fares left).

If you have a fully flexible fare (Y for economy or W for PE) you can only pay to upgrade to a higher fully flexible fare (ie the top J fare) which will cost you a lot more.

Interesting to hear that VS will upgrade you to Z, R or D fare off a K class ticket, even if there are no Z, R or D's left to sell. I'll remember that one.

There does need to be availability in the higher class.

My experience on-the-day has been that as long as there's a physical seat available, check-in will upgrade you regardless of the booking classes available.

The only other thing that they have to check is that they have sufficient meals ordered and loaded, as they won't upgrade you if there aren't going to be enough
