Answer me this, which hotel reward card do you prefer? Do you always try and book the same chain for the perks and points or just book where's cheapest/best on tripadvisor/available on VH etc?

I've just been upgraded to A|Club Platinum apparently (Whoop!) though I'm not likely to ever stay in a Novotel. I've got Marriott Gold, though that will expire soon, but I've quite enjoyed the concierge lounges and room upgrades at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Through Amex I've got SPG Gold too. I'm not likely to ever get the 50 nights a year to keep it though.

What I'd like is free net access, a nice room, maybe discounts, and lots of pillows.

So what do you lot do? [:?]

I'm a full on Hilton points wh*re. Double dipping (hotel points and VS miles), and fairly frequent booster offers. Get good room upgrades as Diamond member, but Hilton facilities are a bit patchy (compare and contrast the 3 Hiltons in Edinburgh, for example); only some hotels have exec lounges, and those vary in opening times.

Some of my colleagues swear by Marriott though...

I use Priority Club, IHG (Hol Inn's, Express, Crowne Plaza etc..) and have done for 6 years, I get room upgrades when available (most of the time it seem's, and when I am using points for a free room I get upgraded as well).Use of Executive Lounge for Complimentary drink and nibbles is always very welcome, so many positives to using this Chain.
Wouldnt say it's the best, but for me I have no reason to change.
And whilst I had to travel for work I was getting points for being away from home! Points are gained for the whole bill, we had some very very good nights in the Bar and these all got credited to my account!

If I am new to the area I will see if there is a Sofitel with decent reviews and will book that. Over the years they have consistently delivered and their loyalty card usually gives me an upgrade, and a couple of city breaks during the year.
The rooms are very well proportioned, big bathrooms, no free internet access but always lots of pillows.

I'm Hilton Au and SPG Gold but to be honest I find prices vary so much with hotels I find it hard to be totally loyal to one specific chain and tend to go with the best deal I can find.

I also really like to try different hotels so again this makes it hard to stay loyal. I do try and stay somewhere that I can earn some type of miles, preferably VS FC miles but as long as it is in one programme or another I'm not too fussy.

Keep in mind you keep your SPG Gold for as long as you have your Amex card ... its renewed so you dont need the 50 nights [:D]

Ah, that was my poor editing. I meant the Marriott Card, but then added about SPG, and didn't re-read it! [xx(]

I used to split between Priority Club (IHG) and Marriott, but worked out I would n't get to any status in either chain.
I stuck to Marriott and got to Platinum last year, staying 75 nights, which was difficult.

When using Marriott rewards they have upgraded me, although I have never noticed any upgrade when paying for a stay.

It is easy to rack up a lot of points with Marriott, particularly when you get to the higher levels.

The only AmEx I am aware of that gets you SPG Au status is the AmEx Platinum charge card (the £300 annual fee one not the cash back credit card) or Centurion

Hilton Diamond and SPG Gold. Much easier to get gold every year given how you can do it on points, stays or nights. Treated well as diamond :-) Especially at the kensington (Their junior suites are nice - Not bad for £90!)
