Narrowed it down to either,

The Mandarin Oriental or Trump Tower

Can anyone tell me what they are like who has stayed there at either one or both.

I like the pool in the MO and the fact it is high up, but the Trump looks awsome and is right accross from CP.

Also daft as it may seem to ask for hotels of this calibre anyone got any tips on how to get the best price for these very pricey venues/

Its for Jan 6th to 10th 2010.
Many thanks.

I've stayed at the MO once in a premier Hudson view room. I'm naturally biased towards this chain and it was a very comfortable stay. Would say service wasn't quite up to the levels of Asia MO's but still very good. The bar, lobby lounge are very pleasant areas to spend your time and the spa there is my personal favourite ( although keenbto try the new Espa spa at the Peninsula in march). The pool is also very nice, although not massive - but those views! You can also have the fun if going to it from your room in your gown which is always fun when the lift is full of suits.

My only complaint is the price. It's so £&@#Û* expensive, even more so now that when I was there in 07. Also, whilst some might like the location and the views are great I prefer to be more downtown, around 14th st.

Cheers

I am with Wolves27 on this. Neither hotels appeal to me personnaly as the location is not what I want. Being a regular in New York I prefer downtown/SoHo area and now stay at SoHo Grand. With the best restuarants and bars in spitting distance it wins hands down to me - MO out of the USA are great but certainly lack something there and are to be avoided if possible if you want the 'real' MO experience - which I have only ever found in Asia.

BTW have stayed at both and the Trump Tower is awful - just a shopping centre with rooms and the MO overporiced for what is currently offers against other hotels in that price range.

Jumeriah Essex House is a really lovely hotel. I think we may stay here next time. However like HK says it all depends on whereabouts you want to stay. Jumeriah is on the edge of CP and its always been silly busy up around there.

Soho is a fantastic area to stay as HK says with its better range of fabby cocktail bars ect

Not stayed at either but I have stayed twice at the UN Millennium Plaza on 44th Street opposite the UN ! Have stayed on the 33rd and 40th floors. The pool has views to die for and is on the 28th floor.

Last time I stayed there in Mar 07 I got a good deal from cityandshow.com

Next month am staying at the Hotel Reserve (yes thats its name) ) near Wall street. found it on expedia. will report back next month.

I think the latest luxury hotel is 'The High Line' but even the reduced opening prices were out of my price range !

Oh crap now its getting more complicated, having never been I really have no idea which bits the best bit.

Should I be asking that question first.

My other arf said I can stay where I want and I imagined such as TT and MO must be in a good location, plus I want it to be special......also somewhere that won't have issues with
a guy guy couple....I thought the Jumeriah might take issue.

We want to see the sights, be relatively safe to wander around on foot and be able to go for cocktails etc.

How about The London NY?

Mrs Buns stayed there last May; good location, can walk anywhere and is very close to the Rockerfeller Centre (some might say better sights that the Empire State).

Truly excellent Concierge who managed to get dinner reservations at top restaurants such as Union Square Cafe and a French bistro called Balthazar.

Rooms nice (shame about sliding door to bathroom though), staff very friendly and attentive. A busy hotel

I don't think you'd have any problem with 2 guys checking in. They've seen it all before. They just want your money.

Hmm Egg - I think I know your tastes from your posts but there are far better hotels in New York. The Royalton is wonderful if you get a loft suite, the Gansevoort is past it, MO is good and very good too but in a horrible location, Trump Tower needs to be given a total miss for their terrible service, the Four Seasons is truly excellent, the Peninsula too, and the latter two are fabulously located for midtown and smart town! If you want old time glamour then only the St Regis will do.

Ping me if you need a reservation at Nobu which is highly recommended for a martini fuelled lunch.

I wasn't that impressed with the St. Regis. But the location was amazing. Not worth the $$$s. And I wasn't even paying!

Just to throw another hotel in the mix I love the London NYC, great value and wonderful suite rooms. Also home to Gordon Ramsey's so plenty of lovely food throughout.

Sorry if this confuses things further, but the Ritz-Carlton on Central Park South is very nice, especially the park view rooms.

I am really appreciating everyones advice here. Just had a look at The London NYC and it seems like my style, there is a sky suite for about £2500 for the 4 days and I think that should be my limit being its just an add-on trip for flying back on a G after my 2.5 weeks in
Miami and Key West.

So any info on that venue, location or experience I would much appreciate it before I pay my one nights deposit for the suite.

EDIT,

I have gone for the Sky Suite at The London NYC, it suits me to the ground the mix of modern and new. And I like good food too...win win and only a stroll from a Cartier shop.

Thanks to the person that mentioned it

Stayed at the UN Millenium a couple of time before and loved the hotel - especially the postcard views from the rooms!

If you stay at The London, then you must try gordan ramsey at The London, we ate there last year for my birthday and it was very good indeed.

This rather helped me decide on the sky suite, apparently they arn't open yet as its the top two floors and its recently finished the top bit ( according to some google searches lol ) . They say its Ramsay food for roomservice too.

Do you think I will need to reserve tables before we arrive in NY or will residents have a priority, it doesn't say on the hotel website.

We reserved around 2 months before i think. We where advised this as its gets very full. On the night we where there, it was full.

It was an excellent meal. There have been some not so great reviews, however we decided we would give it a try and it was great.

Email or call the concierge at the hotel, tell them you are staying and ask them to make you a reservation ...

Yes exactly, the service was second to none. Excellent indeed.

I bet the bill was second to none too! Reminds me, I must make use of my free night at the London before the end of June. I think Decker and Buns have their free nights to use too. Problem is I don't even want to think what the food bill would be if I were to eat with such company, actually its more the wine and champagne bill....
