I've also always used my photo driving licence as ID in the US without any problems. I always lock my passport away in the hotel safe as soon as I arrive and it never moves from there until I go home again.

I too value my passport more than my driving licence.

Though in some states, don't expect them to accept it as a form of age verification.

Thats true, however in the US a UK drivers license is not a form of id, you need the passport to go with it...and not a photocopy either...it really is a pain in the neck at times.

Yes especially when trying to buy a couple of pints of beer at the TD bank north garden[V]

I got carded in a Safeway and the clerk refused to accept my DL 'as it doesn't list your eye colour'. Called for a Super who overrode him.

I've used DL for paying by CC in US and Canada before now.

Same here. I try not to carry my passport around with me too much as it's much more valuable than a foreign driving licence.

That's very true, the thought of losing ones passport is way to scary to think about, however when push comes to shove, it is not a legal ID.

The clerk was right, the supervisor was wrong, but that hoodie knocks years off you [:p]

No, it wasn't 'way off topic'. It was done in the context of reassuring your wife in the event that she might have to drive if your licence did not turn up in time and who, by your own admission was scared of driving over there.
