Upgrading a reward flight

If someone has the answer to this question I would appreciate it.

Early in 2010 I am taking a transatlantic cruise from Florida to Europe so this seemed a good time to use some of the 200k miles me and my wife have accrued over the past couple of years. One way flight required.

I always said I would use our miles for Upper Class but now I am not so sure.....

As UC reward flights are not often offered on MCO and we are taking the kids, we decided to go for premium. Now, the Economy tickets are currently 50% off at 12,500 miles, whilst the PE ones are full price at 37,500. There is also an exta 30 ish in taxes.

I understand a Y reward seat is upgradeable, so what is stopping us buying Y for 12,500 and then paying another 10,000 to upgrade to PE? A saving of 15,000 miles or 60k for all of us.

If I read the 'Fare Codes' section correctly I think - though ISTBC - that an economy reward goes to a T (non directly upgradeable economy) class ticket not a Y (full fare economy, upgradeable) class ticket. The only exception appears to be if you've reached some form of threshold with a VS credit card.

Sadly it won't work. PJH is correct, an Economy reward books into T and normally you can upgrade from a T to a U or a G (Premium/Upper reward buckets). But in this instance you would be charged the full difference due to the promo on the reward prices. If PE is 37,500 to MCO then that is on offer as normally its 75k each.

There would be an additional £40 in APD, and then the difference in YQ.

UC reward flights are offered on the MCO route though - they may have gone already.
