I think they'll be upgrading the Gatwick aircraft from September onwards.

TJ - in the interests of clarity - I am all for 'invitation only' if that is the consensus. I am against 500+ AND 'Quality checking'. If the criterion is 500+ then it should be 500+ in the same way that Gold is 250+. OR we should apply 'qualoty checking' to ALL statuses.

If part of the consideration behind the invitation is quantity of posts then so be it. Personally I'm happy for our moderators to vote amongst themselves and grant it to anybody regardless of posting count.

I agree 100%

We are only talking about a bit of coloured plastic it will not mean a thing to anyone who does not know the site but they will be excellent for recognition of other members. I must have said are you the_banking_scot to about 5 different people in the clubhouse before I found him I got some very funny looks.[:D]

I will order my tags now at whatever colour, I don't think a little bit of black plastic is going to enhance my life that much.If everybody waits to get 500 posts or has to be nominated to join the black tier before they get the plastic on their bags there aren't going to be many about and surely defeats the point of them.

Well, in the interests of keeping it simple, let's leave it at 500+ posts. If someone does attempt to post empty comments, those would be deleted anyway and wouldn't count towards a total posts figure.

As onionz rightly pointed out, these are just a way or showing support for the site and recognition of participation. Putting in restrictions and complications does kind of defeat the point.

...

As one who is employed as a full time chat room/message board moderator (yup ... I spend between 6 and 8 hours a day sweeping message boards and enforcing the various standards which our clients wish to be applied ...) I suspect that there will be some users who will attempt to inflate their post count by those 'empty comments' that Pix mentions. However from what I've seen on this particular set of boards (i.e.; the V-Flyer Forums as a whole) I also suspect that those 'system abusers' will be few and far between. Especially since those applying for a Membership Kit will be actually spending some cold hard cash to obtain those tags ... regardless of color.

In general the users I've observed are mostely interested in sharing their interest in VS and in learning more about the airline and it's destinations. I would guess that the 'Mods' are able to primarily serve as true 'Hosts' (which they all do extemely well) rather than having to act as 'policemen' [:)] I have no doubt that if anyone tried to abuse the membership posting requirement via 'empty posts' the 'Mods' would quickly solve the problem.

As a rather new user who may never actually post enough messages to reach any level other than 'Red' I'd be most willing to have that elusive 'Black' level require the concurrance of one or more Moderators ... and I don't think that any of the other levels should need such concurrance.

Of course since the whole V-Flyer site is really the 'personal brainchild' of Pix ... I figure that whatever standard he feels is best for the site is the exact standard which should be applied! [:D]

My order for my nice new 'red tags' has been sent. I look forward to being able to advertise the site on my flight to LHR (VS020) on 11JUL.

Perhaps the answer to the problem of 'drivel' postings is to have a MAXIMUM number of postings, too. i.e. some posters who have notched up more than 500 in 2004 must have submitted one-worders that add nothing to the Forum (Collins dictionary definition 'medium for meeting, assembly for open discussion or debate'). Sorry to be controversial, but I want to see the site retain its quality.

I think we have to be carefull here as this forum ISNT just about giving good advice re VS (which it does well[8D])
Its also for a group of people who like to use the forum for socialising and communication as we share a common interest!

fly virgin!

I think BOTH are very healthy and it seems crazy to test the quality of postings!

To put this in prospective we are talking about luggage tags!

I see the point in having colours for the status (as pixUK mcuth et al do contribute a lot to this site and its good to recognise the regulars!)

at the end of the day is anyone that bothered?

after all if someone continually posts crap it will be noticed and mods can always hit delete!

I think a bit of humour on this site keeps it real and not 'too' geeky[;)]

If people are really concerned about people posting 'crap for black' why not just allow your peers to nonimate if your contrubutions are worthwhile (both in terms of good advice and forum use)

just my 2 cents worth..

I'll order the silver ones I think as I'll never get to Black
although having silver V-forum and VS gold might confuse

Sorry for the delayed response - away in Paris at the moment for training. Bad Richard did not use his VS card to collect the miles for the flight, not worth it for the hassle for me and for the lovely Premier Staff if the miles don't filter through properly - so used my BD Gold instead. Oh and the benefit of the flight being oversold - compensation [:)]

Now back to topic - I'm sorry if any of my posts on this thread have come across as elitist or arrogant by anyone here. Any person that contributes here is valued equally - post count is just that, merely a number. Everyone here contributes what they can and when, and that is what is valued - this is a great community with overall harmony.

I'm privileged and honoured to be surrounded by such a great group of people that are smart, knowledgeable and at the same time fair. There are people here that have posted less than 500 times, that I would hand a Black card too for there efforts, there are also others that deserve even more for the time and dedication they have provided in making this the place to be - its a joy to be a part of the team here. I can speak from personal experience, that some of the unrest over at another board that I put a lot of time and effort into takes away some of the shine and attraction.

I recently recieved an e-mail from a member that was really apprehensive about mailing me direct with an issue - let me tell you now, my door (well e-mail box) is open at all times - please feel free to mail me or any of the other moderator team at anytime if there is something you can't or don't really want to post here. I'm not perfect, I had three great friends from this site notify me really quickly that a post I had made could be taken out of context due to a missing smiley, thats awesome community spirit and you;re all part of it!

Thanks,
Richard

I would just like to endorse what Richard has said above.

I think we have built up quite a community here in a short space of time. ...Thanks Pix..

There is a lot of humour and banter on the board, all of it good natured and the remarks are taken in the spirit they are intended.

Moreover there is a vast amount of knowledge and experience that people are willing to share in order to make the VS experience better for us all.

Sorry if that sounds soppy, but I am a bit emotional having just watched England get dumped out of the football[:(]

It was a case of either posting here or berating the ref who robbed us... sorry, must calm down...

I'll second (hmm actually, I think we're probably up to fifth or sixth) the comments about the spirit on here. Quite a community's building up, and it's pretty darn good - I think that was reflected in the atmosphere at the social too [:)]

BTW, order for my pack went in on Friday night - I guess my collection of V-Flyer luggage tags is building up quite nicely now [:D]

Cheers

Richard - props to you for a reasoned and thoughtful response. Sorry for the lag in posting from your original but Bourbon Street was a bit of a pull :). Trip report shortly.

This IS a great site and it is made great by the quality of the members. The last social bash just underlined that. That so many people from so many disparate walks of life could just get on like that perhaps indicates an interesting shared demographic of those who 'love VS'.

After spending a week + for the last 2 July's in Bourboun Street - a break is required!

The money I could make on some of the secrets of work colleagues - and that smell of Bourbon St you will never forget! [:0]

Oh good god, how bad is the Bourbon Beer Company (BBC) and the Cats Miaow - the video footage of some colleagues singing should serve as a message on why its not big or clever to sing when drunk! [:D]

And those beads - well.... [:)]

Thanks,
Richard

Pix

My cards arrived today - they are absolutely brilliant [8D] and I cannot wait to use them on my forthcoming BA flight.

(more of which to follow in a TR[;)])

Mrs Buns has asked if there are any possibilities of 'associate memebership' tags[?] - Bearing in mind she already has some of the Tags available from the V Flyer Store, I think she is just jealous
