Although I'm sure you're all aware of it's existence on the site (it's been there a while), I've finally got around to reading it, and some of the facts are very interesting...

19. When Virgin Atlantic began in 1984 there were just four UK office based staff. In 2005, the total UK office headcount is 6,799.

Nearly 7,000 OFFICE BASED staff? Wow, that's a BIG overhead!


3. There are 58 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles millionaires.

I'm assuming this means 58 people with over 1m miles IN their account right now - I can't believe only 58 people have flown more than a million miles with them since 1984...


1. Eight special Flying Club members will be celebrating their 21st birthday on the same day as Virgin Atlantic!

21. Since our first flight in 1984 we've served an amazing 82,364,966 meals onboard. Yum

Only eight other FC members with the same Birthday as Mrs D. Thought there would be lots more.

I'm guessing plenty more people have flown a million miles with VS since 1984, just only 58 have the willpower to keep the million in their account without spending them.

Hmm. Agreed, it would be nice to have in the bank, BUT imagine the level of travelling they've done to get them - I'd imagine the last thing they want is a free flight somewhere :D

(I have nowhere near that many, but still don't fancy using my "hard earned miles" on yet another flight!)

I think thats a current balance of 1m+ miles. I'm not too far off the 1m lifetime miles mark (since mid 99), but then it didn't help that I spent nearly half a million last year on flights for family!

People have called before to try and redeem the Necker reward, but its only limited to the 'Celebration' weeks which are opened up to Virgin Holidays.

Just had a ruff tot up and I have redeemed 610,000 miles in the last couple of years,and just enough left in the tank for 3 UCs when the LHR CH is finished.

It does seem a lot. Works out at an average of over 4 per day. I assume the average plane has 9 wheels (but I could be wrong there so please correct me) so that means they are effectivly changing the tyres on at least one plane every 2 days. How many aircraft do they have???

Well in racing remember, they change the tires at least once every race. So when you consider that a huge 346 or 744 is landing on a runway going a couple hundred miles per hour and has to slow down within a certain number of feet, you gotta think that the tires take a beating. And it's not just landing either, the strain the tires experience while the aircraft is on the ground must be enormous.

Umm - a widebody aircraft has a few more than 9 tyres

The A340 has 14, and the 747 has 18 [:0]

Thanks, thought my guess would be a little low...

should get about 200 landings out of a set of tyres, so not changed as often as has been calculated here.
