The NBC version will be horrible, absolutely horrible. I'm willing to try it out, but I really don't have high hopes. American TV producers and writers simple have no talent. BBC America airs Top Gear on Mondays but they're half a season or more behind. Still, it's better than nothing. They used to be on TechTV before Comcast decided to ruin that network.

I have to second fellow US residents - not holding my breath on the NBC version. There's too much wrong about it. But, Clarkson is producing, and the UK crew will be showing up 'fairly regularly', whatever that means. But it's a tough one to pull off, I'd have to agree.

The problem will be sponsorship for the US version. The BBC does not have it so if Clarkson totaly destroys the reputation of a model he is reviewing because it is awfull, it doesn`t matter. Imagine the boys in the US reviewing a car that belongs to one of the shows sponsors. Not sure how unbiased their views will be when the show`s purse strings are held by one of the car manufacturers. Unless of course the shows sponsors are unrelated to the automotive industry.

Today's Times quotes Leno as not buying into the gig precisely because of this ...
I do agree with this being one of the problems. I also have to wonder whether going with an assortment of low-grade entertainers is going to play well. Hard to tell. I would not have enjoyed Leno, and Carolla's even worse - famous people with more money than sense buying cars left and right aren't quite the same thing as the UK presenters [:?]

Though it's not quite the same type of car show (more for car advice), by far the best one out there in the US is Car Talk, on public radio. But I have such trouble thinking of who would actually make good presenters for a Top Gear USA. I don't like Corolla at all, and have never found him to be funny. Leno isn't a 'famous person with more money than sense buying cars left and right', he actually does have quite a bit of car knowledge, but I doubt his capabilities of test driving hot new cars and such. I feel like there are probably a few good choices in the car magazine/newspaper column world out there.

A good episode.
Thought Top Gear Stuntman was a bit pointless but loved the police car challenge!
'The Rozzers - Catching Crims and Locking Them Up in Your Community'
'Polizia - In jail No One Can Hear You Scream'
'The Police - Call 999 For Details'

I've been on the waiting list for ages - where are my tickets?????

OK, I'm being a bit harsh towards Leno, whom I like about as much as Carolla [:)]
I love Car Talk to the point that a Saturday morning highlight is reading the column at the Ferry Building, coffee in hand ... but you are quite right, different business.
I also agree with you about scouting the car media world - in a way this is what they did for Top Gear in the UK. Ultimately, in tapping Leno/Carolla, and 'TV repairmen' that women drool over, it looks to me like the US production is trying to build in success for the show because of its hosts' recognition, rather than keeping the focus on the quality and feel of the show itself. In this way, if Carolla ends up doing his job as a Clarkson replacement as well as he did it as a Howard Stern replacement, Top Gear US will be toast.

I was watching the first episode of Inspector Lewis on PBS last night, and there was an ad for a TV series with the Car Talk brothers. I think it's starting in July.

Here me now, it will suck, no, it will suck big time, Clarkson is what makes the show and none of those three have what it takes to fill his shoes.
Now it's down to BBC America to rescue me from NBC.
I hear you! Totally agree. I will not be watching the American version. I don't think it's possible to match the chemistry that exists between Clarkson, May and Hamster.
I love watching Top Gear on BBC A, especially when i'm feeling a little homesick![:)]
