I've had an increasing number of people (well, 3) ask me what my favourite Apps are on the iPhone. I suspect since there are over 3,000 of the things to choose from, it's a valid question to help you pick through the huge selection.
My (current) favourites - and I discover new gems almost daily - are;
Movies (Free): Brilliant. Tells you what's at your local cinema, what's coming up, review ratings, DVD releases and even trailers you can watch right on your phone. Very well written piece of software, and being free is a big bonus.
Remote (Free): Apple's own iApp for remote controlling an iTunes library on another machine. I have a spare Mac in my loft and a pair of yatch speakers in the bathroom ceiling. With Remote I can control the music while having a shower, and it even gives me the album artwork on the phone while it's playing.
Shazam (Free): Recognises a piece of music playing, even if you're in a pub with background chatter. This has put an end to those questions 'oh, what's that' when you hear a piece of music you like in a bar, or even music used on an advert.
tvGuide (2.39): Really nice interface showing you what's on TV now, next, or a whole day's listing for a channel; or turn sideways to get a very cool grid view that slides around with your finger showing all channels in a timeline.
Trains (2.39): Shows the departing or arriving trains at a selected station in slidable panels (a bit like the standard Weather app). Perfect for me, as I don't book a particular train when going into or back from London, so I can see in advance which platform the next fast train is, and whether I need to get my skates on.
Spore Origins (5.99): If you've played Spore on the PC/Mac, this is like and extended version of the first level. Great use of the accelerometer in the iPhone, and one of those simple but addictive games that a whole lot easier to play than Super Monkey Ball.
Sol Free (Free): I'm a big fan of solitaire games to kill time on the tube, and this is just a great free version. It has five variants of Solitaire.
Aurora Feint (Free): Kinda weird tetris-type stacking game, with a deep backstory and role-playing elements. The stacking stuff is very addictive, and the other stuff means it's difficult to get bored too quickly.
Air Sharing (Free): Turns the iPhone into a Bonjour-accessible network drive so you can copy documents and images to it. It does have a slight drawback that you can only see the documents via Air Sharing, but if you need to take a PDF or Word Doc with you, it's easier than faffing about emailing it to yourself on the phone, and it does have the benefit of letting you share it out to someone else on their machine too.
I'm also playing with Flight Executive (3.99) - it allows you to enter your itinerary, and it'll then track flights for you including delays, gates and baggage belt numbers. The one drawback is it only displays flights a few days in advance, so you can't see your itinerary for, say, next week. I'll try it out at the end of the month though, and let you know if it's any good.
