Spurs...How can they be saved?

How can the Once Mighty Spurs be saved?

There will be many answers, but one that is not going to be discussed please is 'Sacking Juande Ramos' the guy has a hard enough job already.

Is a Director of Football an essential part of modern day Football?

I am concerned when English clubs get humiliated in Europe and a once Mighty Club are floundering at the foot of the Premiership[n]

I think a DOF has a future, it's just getting it to work in England. It's has worked years in Europe but it's a newish idea in England. It helps to have the DOF and the Manager/1st Team Coach to be singing off the same hymm sheet.

In Spurs case, straight from the off, we needed a left-sided midfielder and another 2 forwards.

It's been speculated that Ramos had a shopping list which included 4 players from Sevilla and Garcia from Athletico Madrid. This list was given to Comelli and Levy. Comelli went out and 'opened' the door for Levy to negotiate and sign Modric, Bentley (who has gone recorded to say he was surprised Spurs wanted him when they've got Aaron Lennon), Del Santos and Gomes.

Throughout the pre-season, Man Utd and Liverpool right from the start were interested in Berbatov and Keane. Martin Jol was in a similar situation when Man Utd wanted Michael Carrick but he was canny enough to see say to the board 'if you want to sell him, do it early so a replacement could be brought for the pre-season'. Lessons weren't learnt and no manager would sell his best two strikers without having replacements signed UNLESS he was overruled by the Chairman. However, what the use of having 50m without giving yourself time to use it on replacements. I don't believe Pavylchenko was a replacement but an addition.

In Comelli's case, the DOF position hasn't worked for him. He came to the club from Arsenal where he had the title of 'Continental Scout'. The player of note that he identified who was signed by Arsenal was Giles Grimaldi. As I've mentioned, he only set up the initial meetings with the players signed this season with Levy actually get involved with the negotiations.

It hasn't helped that Ledley King can only play 1 game every 1-2 weeks. This doesn't help with consistency of the team and I believe if he is not capable of playing every week then to bring in someone who can.

The other problem is confidence, if the team was settled where no was no chopping and changing then that may help. I think that Spurs have not played the same team two games running.

So in short, the following needs to happen.

1. The Manager and Chairman need to understand each other and get the right players for the team and not what the Chairman thinks the team needs.
2. Use the 50m to bring 2 strikers who are proven and a commanding centre half.
3. Settle the team, don't keep chop and changing players in hope of trying to find a successful side.

As for English clubs being humilated in Europe, only Spurs and Portsmouth lost! An in Spurs' case, it was down to two stupid mistakes (Gomes giving away the penalty and O'Hara getting sent off).

as a spurs fan i can see no end to our demise until we get 2 top rate strikers hopefully in the jan window i was sad when we brought Bent as i have never rated him and he has had little or no impact, and to sell the other 3 strikers berb keane defoe and not replace even 1 of them is pure madness, no manager could make a team out of that shambles.

1. More strikers
2. A true leader in defense (a la Rio)
3. Stop tinkering with the bloody line-up in every game (I do hang this on Wanda Ramos)

I take no joy in Hotspur's demise, and I do hope they stay up.

I have said this before, as an ardent Ipswich fan we would gladly have Benty back at Portman Road[?][y] So fingers crossed we can do a loan deal in January[:o)] Then who will play upfront for you[:w] But this has not bothered the senior hierachy before has it[:p]

I shall retract the previous statement in the cold light of a new morning. Can't believe within an hour of sacking Ramos, 'Arry has been installed as the new manager!!!

He has a proven record of getting the best out of underperforming players and getting out of relegation scraps. Could he be the saviour of Spurs?

I will be happy if we can stay up this year, I know it sounds bad, but the team is pretty bad, a lot I am sure is down to lack of confidence, however a win is a win and it cannot do any harm to their egos.

And Ledley King played two games running!

he and the rest of the defence wont play many more if gomes keeps taking them out ! I will call arry god and take back all thats gone before if we can get a result wed against ars***l and we stay up.
