As Darren said, I think we should all play nicely and just calm down a little.

This thread seems to have gone VERY off topic and quite clearly everyone has their own opinions on appropriate dress code, but as has been said on here many a time before, you are allowed to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, regardless of which class you are flying.

inkiboo - you are correct about the names on the forum, the majority of members do not work for Virgin, and this V-Flyer is a totally independent site.

The famous England Shirt being standard wear, and crispy white trainers
(why does every one buy new white trainers to go on holiday to places that likely sells them cheaper!!)

The problem is Football shirts- they give impressions to others:

They 'maybe' like the hooligans seen in the press, (Our lovely international image..)
They 'maybe' travelling in a bubble, with an unwillingness to fit into the country you are visiting, (not everyone will strike up a conversion because your a Bristol City supporter) (example only)
They 'may' drink too much lager and avoid any foods with 'foreign sauces', insist on the full English and poke fun at local customs

They 'may' also be worldly wise, join in & fit in with the locals they're likely with, and live new found experiences - in so removing the well re-enforced negative image currently given wearing these polyester nightmares.

As for this topic: where's my outrage?

Now then what mess have I created here! [:?]

Obviously I said it somewhat tongue in cheek; I'm not labelling anyone as common or having a poke at the class system.

Wrong for me to stereotype - but I do have a general loathing of 'Brits Abroad' - my chap av-norw covered it quite well. The holiday being 'just like being at home with the greasy breakfast and pub, just in a warmer climate'. Certain parts of Orlando make Blackpool look upmarket now - it has become tacky and awful. Catering to a certain audience if you will. If you want to parade round in a football shirt, then that's your choice. I have the problem of having to go on holiday with Decker at times, and fashion faux pas is a daily routine. [:w]

Me a snob? Err well. I've never quite got the grip of 'Being English' - the mindless stupidity I see whenever we get through to a sporting final, and suddenly all the wifes and girlfriends are wearing England shirts. Though to understand some rationale, well you only have to look at 'newspapers' such as The Sun, Mirror, Mail etc - now there is a group that do need to be shot! [:p]

As to the comparisons to the Alitalia Facebook gang; well, I don't work for Virgin and I think it is fair to say my views/opinions are sometimes out there. Turd in swimming pool if you will. [xx(]

Your words, Sir -- none of us would dare ever utter them (save for the odd unsavoury male model or Vegas pit boss...). And should they happen to be true, there's no doubt You are the most finely turned turd that did ever emerge from...well...ummm...yes.

Sorry, but football shirts when worn outside of the sporting arena are indeed chavtastic.I am the proud owner of several bits of nice shiny polyester (that I wouldn't be seen dead in ordinarily) but are badges of honour in the appropriate environment. Heaven knows, I do not support a 'fashionable' team (I'm a Black Cat by default) and I have worn the offending articles at both home and away games (although I have to admit that the wearing of such attire at away games has been clandestine at times -I'd like to keep the facial features that I was born with).

I shall open by saying Roy Keane is god.

Now, a serious address to the topic at hand.

We discuss the lowly, simple, mass-produced footy kit. Let us regard it. Prominent is the sponsor's logo, the team's badge, perhaps the number and name of a favourite player, the EPL logo. All arrayed atop a shirt sewn by some half-blind child paid ten sesame seeds in a third world sweat shop.

This is what we speak of. Weighs nowt in the hand, carries immeasurable weight in symbolism.

And such symbolism. Not only a talisman for our preferred team, but evidently a marker for a certain class. A certain class of behaviour -- lower class, to be exact. But, in the cold light of fact, one cannot assume the kitsman to be a chav, a numpty, a bounder...too many old boys and dons wear the stuff, and I should know. One cannot assume the man or woman who wears footy kit outside the grounds to be a yob or an ASBO. Facts do not support it, and to argue as such is to reveal a willful disregard for truth.

Why, then, the hate? I can only deduce that it's a deep-seated, not-altogether-well-reasoned assigning of unearned disgust on the part of the haters.

I wear my MUFC and England kit in public as a point of pride and as a notice to the world that I hold footy close to my heart. I'm no mindless vandal -- I'm a football supporter (and a Democrat, and an art collector, and a PR, and a subscriber to Wallpaper, and myriad other socio-political indicators). Risking a maudlin sentiment: I am many things and therefore many men.

My kit is not my sum total, nor is any other part of me, tangible, spiritual or behavioural. And so, I must marvel at the level of churlish disdain lobbed at such an innocuous aspect of any man or woman's character.

A few feet of fabric and some applied embroidery. Is that all it takes to scare you? To cause you such pain and bother?

Do not fear the kit. Fear your reaction to the kit.

That only leaves the question - Does one tuck the shirt in or leave it out in UC?
