GJ, as Manc fan, you haven't experienced what most teams (with the exception of Arsenal) go through! The revolving manager door, takeovers and illegal dealings. If only every team has the Man U's policy of leaving the manager to do what he's suppose to do and give him the time to do it. In the 25 years that Fergie has been at Man U, Spurs have had 15 managers.

Ah, I just taken your bait, hook, line and sinker! [:I][:I]

I don't have a problem with the concept of a Director of Football as it works very well in Spain and Italy. My problem which is what appears to have happen in Newcastle and Spurs is where the DOF and the coach/manager are not singing from the same hymn sheet. The whole point is of the DOF to look for players that the manager fully endorses, try to sign them and to get the best value for players leaving the club. The DOF also takes away the non footballing parts away from the manager leaving him to concentrate on the footballing parts.

So, in Newcastle's case, the whole 1st team squad is up for sale and Wise brings in players without Keegan's knowledge. In Spurs case, Comolli brings in Bentley, Gomes, Modric, Del Santos, Pavylchenko with Ramos's knowledge but he also bring Darren Bent and paid over the odds for him (ok, last season). Comolli then sells Berbatov and Keane for a great piece of business but not replacing them with good players afterwards.

Ramos is used to having a DOF from working in Spain. I think that it's English clubs are not used to working with this structure and how it's suppose to work.

There is only one case of it working properly in England and that's Chelsea.

But I agree with you Will, it doesn't matter what players Ramos has at his disposal, he is responsible for tactics. It doesn't help if he has one hand tied behind his back if he doesn't have a wealth of strikers.

Of course it is always much easier for the manager to get his bit of spin out into the media than it is for the DOF. Personally, as with most situations in football, I think it is half a dozen with one and six with the other.

One would hope that the DOF is listening to Ramos' needs and has enough knowledge of the game to be aware of what players are needed. Surely these two men are communicating on a regular basis?

Chelsea's situation only works because everyone is scared of Roman (heck the guy must have some pretty beefy bodyguards!). Having said that there are players that have been a waste of money for Chelsea, SWP, Sidwell and that other guy who they splashed out 10 million for and then didnt even get in the reserves! The difference for Chelsea is that they have so much money they can go and buy anyone, stick them on the pitch and let them play.

I agree I think a bit of consitency works well. Sadly the days of allowing managers time is over. Ferguson was utter rubbish in his first couple of years at MUFC. He won pretty much nothing and they were miles off the leaders. If he had results like that today, he would have been sacked, no question about that. Just look at Rafa, the guy wins a couple of big trophies, makes a couple of big finals and still the board want to sack him.

Fergie's longevity isn't a fait accompli -- he's been left to do his thing for 25 years because, by and large, he's managed silverware-winning sides. If the sacked managers of various teams all had those skills, then I'd be aghast -- as it is, a good number of them are numpties.

THIS IS A SPECIAL GRINNING JACKANAPES COMMUNIQUE. STAND-BY FOR NEWS

Greetings, V-Flyers. As the weekend's footy comes to an end, I want to make a statement to clarify my position on Hull City Football Club:

At the beginning of the season, I, like many football fans, greeted the arrival of HCFC into the Premiership with an arch derision. After weeks of exemplary performance on the pitch, HCFC has earned the right to dispel these sentiments. I want to make it clear that I do not believe HCFC will be relegated at the end of this season and that, on the last day of the season, their fans will be possessed of the double joy of the memory of a fine season and continued participation at the Premiership level.

Opinions expressed in this special communique are those of Grinning Jackanapes only. No support for HCFC over MUFC should be assumed.

Is there any player in the Spurs team who wants to play for them?? Ramos takes off Bentley who looked OK and then puts Lennon on to the left when he was doing alright on the right. Seriously though, we needed Ledley King today and not on Thursday against Udinese. If he is not capable of playing more than two games in a week then get someone who can.

Right, where's the nearest pub, I'm going to drown my sorrows.

And that is exactly right, even after the change of ownership Fergie still ruled.

HAHAHA -- well done, Spurs for whipping those Scousers!

I am sitting at SFO, and followed the game by text update...but I heard reports that as Liverpoo walked out of the tunnel, the hubcaps from the Spurs team bus dropped out of their kit. Anyone see this?

HAHAHA -- what a day for the footy :-)

Not really, scoring 3 goals at OT and not get anything from the game is very unusual and a bit unlucky really, and something that VERY few teams do.

But you lost. And since this is the Premiership, that's ultimately all that counts. Not saying you didn't do well against our gormlessness, but it's poor old Hull for losing the three points, fair and simple.

'Losing the three points'? Can you technically lose something you have never had?

We lost the game, Man Utd won the game and therefore gained 3 points, we are still on the same amount of points as before the game so didn't win or lose any points. Splitting hairs? Seems to be the name of the game on here at the moment so thought I would join in![:p]

So, as I have been away for a while, I thought would give me thoughts on the latest happenings in the football world.

Firstly, it seems that winning your CL Group means that you no longer get an 'easier' team in the next round. I am sure both SAF and RB will be wanting to avoid Inter Milan.

Secondly, its quite clear that Keane cannot handled the pressure and has bottled it.

Thirdly, Ramos as Madrid coach, wtf? Do they not get PL highlights over there! [}:)]

Fourthly, aren't we all glad that we don't have an Eboue on our team [:p]

As for the league. Great to see Hull still up there. Arsenal just aren't firing on all clinders. Man City players are clearly worried that the big money spending hasnt started yet hence the miss firing in games.

Lovely to see my boys on top of the league and a good performance on Tuesday in the CL with a lot of younger fringe players. All we have to do is win every game from now until the end of the season and we will be champions. [:D]

I not sure if Keane has bottled it, just having to play a different role than he was to at Spurs. He's an 'in-the-hole' striker not upfront striker or a left sided striker. Even at Spurs, he was great when directing the flow of passes. He always found players in scoring positions (no different to how he is playing at Liverpool) and a lot of his goals were penalties.

The problem is the expectation that he has to score the goals while Torres is out and there is no other upfront strikers. In hindsight, was selling Crouch going come back and bite Liverpool.[:?]

As for Ramos, I agree wtf are Real Madrid are up to!!!! At least most of the players will understand his instructions, even if they are crap.
