New York Hotel - HELP

I am looking for a decent 4 or 5 star hotel for three nights. There will be myself and hubby + our two sons (18 and 13yrs). Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Any idea of where you want to stay in NY (midtown, downtown, etc) or things you want to do when there?

I haven't stayed in many, but I will say that I loved the Sofitel. Quite a lot of people there on business though, which I thought spoiled the vibe a bit as we were holidaying.

We love the Peninsula - near the park / apple shop, and a great roof top bar...

We love the Renaissance at Times Square. Good location, it has been recently done up and looks fantastic and if you go at the right time you can get some good rates. Just remember NYC hotels are VERY expensive and the rooms are not the largest, so pick well!

I know its an obvious thing to suggest, but have a look at a few of the top hotels on Trip Advisor, not so much the reviews, but more the traveller photos, I find they are really helpful for giving me a true impression of what I will receive.

Be warned lots of older NYC hotels have rooms that are very small and come complete with nocturnal visitors (cockroaches[:0]).The Renaissance location is fantastic too as Neil has said. Choose your abode carefully!

Marriott Marquis at Times Square. Good seized rooms, good free breakfast if you can get into the Executive / Business Lounge.

has to be the Westin at Times Square that gets my vote. Biggest rooms I have seen in NYC.

The Empire has been newly renovated and so took a gamble on it! god i hope it will be nice?

For cool funk, the Royalton always gets my vote. Great location too.

Echo the comment about the Peninsula, and if you can get a good rate the Four Seasons is superb!

The Westin TS doesn't have proper curtains, they have 'cool' blinds, which let in so much light. I like a nice pair of blackout curtains when I go away [:D]. I think they do have the loudest toilet flush around though.

I like the Marriott Marquis as I got free gold status with Marriott from BA. Gets me into the lounges, free nibbles and drinks, and right in the centre of it all. I'm not going to be able to renew it, so I'm making the most of it whilst I can! [}:)]

I can't give you a hotel recommendation, but I can say, check around for rates, family just came back and paid under $100 for a 4 star, I will check around.

I don't know what to do. I did look at the Westin, but thought I read somwhere that they don't accept children under 16. Have looked at Loews Regency, that seems nice. Thanks for your replies, will have a good look around.

Having just booked a flight to NYC this morning I'm also looking for hotels. The Westin TS is nice having stayed there before. The W Times Square is fantastic also but expensive (stayed there twice now)

Does the Westin Times Sq accept children?

I have stayed at the Millenoum UN Plazza a couple of times. All rooms are above the 29th floor so there are fab views. The swimming pool is on the 28th floor and there is a covered tennis court on the roof.

I last stayed there a couple of years ago and got a good deal from http://www.cityandshow.com but the advice is to shop around.

My room was on the 40th floor and was absolutly massive but the decor was a little tired looking.

The only real downsides are that the restaurent is v expensive - its geared for tax payer funded diplomats but dont let that put you off - but there are diners and other places to eat near by and that the nearest subway station (at Grand Central) is about a 5 block walk away.

Been looking for the last day or so for hotels in NYC and I came across Hotel Mela (I actually found it in the VH USA/Canada brochure)

It's looks to be in a good location (not far from Times Square), gets good reviews and the rates are much better than other hotels in the same area.

I've booked this hotel for my NYC trip.

My best advice would be to find a hotel and rate you are happy with, but can cancel. Chances are, a good deal will come along nearer the time, like on Travelzoo.

Marriotts and Renaissance charge for their net access. It'll be $16.95 a day with unlimited local and long distance calls included. Normally it's only free in their concierge lounges.

Some of their brands like Courtyard and Residence Inns do include it for free. As is usual with hotel chains, they include it in the cheaper hotels, but the expensive ones make you pay extra.

Wifi is not free at the Renaissance.

Choices from me:

Affinia 50 (Between the UN and Rockefeller Plaza on 50th)

Millennium Hilton (At Ground Zero)

Embassy Suites (Again just near Ground Zero on the waterfront).

As others have said New York hotels are pricey. Have a look at the following websites that seem at the moment to have the best deals.

The other option is the Hilton at Newark Railway Station and get the train or Path into NYC. It's under a 20 minute journey to Penn Station or WTC Station.
